To develop a primary care physician with appropriate -

Knowledge, Skill and Attitude to treat

common disease at the primary care level.

To diagnose, workup and proper referral of common surgical conditions.

3 Domains of Learning

Teaching learning methods

The following strategy is used for organizing teaching learning activities:

a) Lectures are used for teaching the basic principles &

system based aspects of surgery.

b) Integrated seminars are utilized during the last

semesters for teaching system based surgery.

c) Clinical teaching to students on surgical Inpatient

wards.

d) Basic surgical skill training.

Guidelines – Clinical postings

Clinical posting will be from 9.00 a.m. to Noon, from Monday to Friday, barring Public Holidays.

Attendance is marked on a daily basis. A minimum of 75% attendance is mandatory for permission

to appear in the ward exam. Attendance at clinical postings will be counted towards the

final eligibility for University exams. Any person coming to clinic after 9.10 A.M. will be marked

absent. Maintain a record of cases seen and surgical skills learnt in a

diary/logbook.

Objectives of Clinical training

At the end of clinical posting in surgery, a student should be able to:

Elicit a detailed & relevant historyCarry out a physical examinationIdentify patients’ problemsReach a differential diagnosisFormulate appropriate investigationsInterpret the results of investigationsPlan appropriate managementUndertake some aspects of management

Assessment of Clinical training A ward exam will be conducted for the students at the end of each clinical posting. Minimum of 75% attendance is needed to be able to appear in the exam. The marks obtained at these ward exams will count towards the final University Internal Assessments (best 3 of 5 exams to be held).Assessment at the ward exam will be based on the following:

o Case reports portfolio

o Performance at exam: clinical, OSCE, viva voce as applicable

o Professional attitude and behaviour

o Logbook- accuracy, timely completion
