Optical Spectrum Services - Robust design and superior coverage – backed by experts

Is your network feeling the strain?

Developments in technology are opening up lots of new market opportunities. The development of the “Cloud”, causing businesses to be increasingly dependent on remote data and applications, is expected to drive the demand for data centres by 25 per cent CAGR over the next few years.

The return of growth to the finance sector is making high-frequency, algorithmic trading one of the fastest growing areas in the sector. And with smartphones making it easier to do so much more on the move, Mobile Network Operators are continually looking for increasing capacity.

This huge growth of “data-hungry” applications is also a big challenge for you, stretching your ability to offer high quality solutions to the limit. It is also making it expensive to keep up with demand. Although services up to and including 1Gb have done the job so far, the need for multiple 10Gb circuits is set to increase rapidly over the next five years.

Optical circuits enable you to offer your customers a range of premium services more easily, from cloud applications and next generation data centres to high-speed file transfer and business continuity solutions, such as information storage and retrieval.

Helping you get the right Optical Solution first time

Simply talking to our experts could help you avoid many pitfalls that exist. It will almost certainly help you make more informed choices for your business.

Our experts take your investment decisions seriously

Optical circuits are an important long-term investment and we will help you choose solutions that support the long-term future of your business rather than harming it for the sake of short-term savings.

That’s why our entire process is geared up to give you access to network specialists who will listen to your needs, understand your future requirements and design the right solutions for you. In our experience, taking this approach makes it easier, quicker and more cost-effective to upgrade and expand your network later.

Our goal is to keep you competitive

With a wealth of expertise behind us, we know how important availability, coverage and peace of mind are, and how heavily flexibility, scalability and upgradability depend on the quality of solution design. We will work with you to make sure these needs are met so you are in a stronger position to win the opportunities your changing market is creating.

Helping you avoid costly mistakes

Whether you’re a fixed network communication provider offering services to multi-national corporations, a mobile operator seeking to meet growing demand in public hotspots or a systems integrator offering outsourced datacentres to the public sector, you need to make your optical network investment work as hard for you as possible.

To do that you need to:

•Make sure the choice you make is able to meet your longer term requirements

•Avoid solutions that restrict your ability to expand due to poor geographic coverage

•See through solutions that are cheap at first, but force you to invest again when you want to upgrade or which restrict your ability to compete

•Understand the trade-off you make when choosing solutions that use shared infrastructure.

Our experts are on hand to advise you and if you’re new to optical solutions will help you understand:

•When it makes sense to switch from multiple EAD or EBD circuits

•How to add optical circuits to your existing network so you can offer better business continuity

•How optical solutions can help you save thousands of pounds on space and power.

Available on one, three and five year minimum period options, our services are provided over dedicated fibres for your exclusive use. You can treat them as your own so you don’t have to worry about the risks that come with sharing. You get exactly what you pay for with full control on additional bandwidth/wavelength requirements. It’s what helps to make our service different from the rest.

What our Optical Spectrum Services offer•Reduced cost of ownership – easy upgradability

and expansion, along with reduced prices for minimum period options, make our optical products more cost-effective over the longer term. Now you can meet your future needs without further heavy investment. And once your initial investment is made it is cheaper to add wavelengths. So, by planning ahead and building growth into a solution you can save yourself a lot of money in the future.

•Superior reach and resilience options – not only do our services allow you to move high volumes of data over long distances, we also have a core network that covers the whole of the UK. This includes many rural and difficult locations that others can’t reach, so you never need to worry if a connection to a new site is possible. Our reach and routing options also mean that we can provide primary and completely diverse resilient paths whenever you need them.

•Flexible solutions – get exactly what you need, wherever you need it. As well as offering a range of different speeds and protocols (configured in different ways), we can cover long distances and offer minimum period options too.

•Your promise is our promise – keeping customer promises is important. We will make sure we deliver to the date we have agreed with you every time and we’ll even try to beat it where we can. Our excellent track record for on-time delivery speaks for itself.

•Exclusively yours - our products offer uncontended bandwidth over dedicated fibre (not a shared infrastructure that could be impacted by other customers’ decisions). That means you get exactly what you pay for with full control on additional bandwidth/wavelength requirements. And the capacity you don’t use on day one will still be there when you need it. All of this equals highly secure, better quality services with no hidden risks.

•Empowering you early on - using our Advanced Order Management Process (provided as standard), we can turn around a desk-based survey in five days allowing you to make an early decision on whether to progress your order.

And there’s more…

We provide a range of additional services to support your business.

Standalone survey

A desk-based survey is a standard part of the optical design process. But if you are planning to connect a new site where new fibre might be needed, a standalone survey will help you understand any excess construction charges and lead times before you place a firm order or bid for a contract.

Project Services

Our Project Services capability provides planning and management expertise to help you take on any project regardless of size, complexity or UK location. They can help you:

•Manage installations in a building owned by a third party (eg data centre or communications room owned by the landlord of a multi-tenant building)

•Co-ordinate multiple circuit order deliveries

•Maintain service when you take over assets following a successful win back

•Take on large or complex projects (eg network change outs) where it doesn’t make commercial sense for you to invest yourself.

Our Optical portfolio

Backed by experts, our Optical Services are a highly flexible and cost-effective way of moving very large amounts of data between two locations. Provided over dedicated optical fibre links, they offer secure, high bandwidth connections using Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology. Ring, chain or point to point configuration is available as well as completely diverse resilience options.

We’ll take on any order however complex

We don’t cherry-pick the work we want to do or the work that is easier or more profitable for us. If you choose us our experts will use their skills to deliver your solution right first time, wherever you need it and however challenging or time-consuming it is.

Processes that deliver certainty

When we say we can do something, we can and once you get a firm quote from us it stays that way. We will explain what’s included, what fibres are available today and we’ll tell you if anything else needs to be done that might add to the price

Delivered by experts

Our solution design is delivered and installed by experts who understand our network inside out. We take the time to understand what you need and build solutions that will stand the test of time.

Backed by experts

Our experts are backed by more experts. We work really closely with our equipment suppliers, ADVA Optical Networking and Ciena, to make sure you get the very best design every time.

Relationship-focused

We stick with you every step of the way. We listen carefully to all your needs, making sure your future requirements are covered. Taking time to do this makes it easier and quicker to upgrade and expand your network later.

Consultative approach

We run regular forums to make sure you have the opportunity to hear the latest news about our Optical portfolio, share your views on proposed developments and influence our overall direction. This includes a “Statement of Requirement” (SOR) process, which you can use to formally request the introduction of a new product or a change to an existing one.

Development visibility

We publish our Product Roadmaps on the Openreach portal. They detail all planned activities and are available to anyone registered on our portal. Using these will help you to plan better for the future. They are updated through discussions at industry forums and are closely linked to the development of our network.

Resource at your fingertips

We are the largest and most experienced access and backhaul provider with 30,000 engineers to help deliver your network requirements. Our Project Services capability can also help you manage projects and bid for work that you would not otherwise be able to resource.

Our role in London 2012

As the official Telecommunications Infrastructure Partner and a Sustainability Partner for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Openreach is very proud to be delivering the communications infrastructure that will serve the competition venues, training venues and other non-competition venues right across the UK. Our infrastructure will also provide a lasting legacy to support the massive regeneration of the Stratford area of London.

Working towards a sustainable future

Being environmentally responsible is about actions, not words, which is why our approach to sustainability is linked closely to both our product development and operational activities. For example, by making improvements to our voice, broadband and backhaul infrastructure we have significantly reduced our energy consumption and carbon emissions. And just reducing the number of times we need to send out our engineers has helped us lower the amount of CO2 released from our vans and lorries by more than 20 per cent.

Why choose Openreach?

There are lots of great reasons why our customers trust us to help their business. Which ones matter the most to you?
