Operation Bookworm

Why Operation Bookworm?

• Children have to gain control of the match between speech and print in order to become successful readers

• They need to practice this until it becomes automatic

How you can help...

• Read a “just right” book with a child

• Help her use strategies to decode unknown words

• Talk to her about her favorite part

Strategies Readers Use to Decode New Words• Get your mouth ready

• Look for chunks you know

• Blank it--What would make sense?

• Sound it out

• You said ____. Does that make sense? Does that sound right? Does that look right?

Operation Bookworm Procedure

• Pick up list of students to read with

• Get students Ziploc bags from bag bin

• Choose a book for each student from appropriate book bin

• Get student

• Do a quick picture walk

• Have student read book to you

• Ask student to tell you about their favorite part. Have them give you two reasons why they liked that part

• Remove previously read book from bag, place new book in bag

• File old book in appropriate bin
