The Graeme Long Medal, presented by Emergency Ser-vices Minister James Merlino, specifically recognised MrMoss’ contribution over the2015/16 season.

“I thought I actually did lessthis year but when you write itall down I actually did morebecause it was in all differentareas.”

The win automaticallynominates Mr Moss, a “doer”by nature, for Surf Life SavingAustralia’s Volunteer of theYear award.

“I don’t find it difficult to beinvolved, I don’t like to sitthere and see things not hap-pen,” he said.

The 53-year-old competedin surf lifesaving at a state andnational level as a youngster, cementing his passion for thesport.

“I think I’ve clocked up 40-odd years in lifesaving,” hesaid.

“I always wanted to be a

teacher and didn’t get thegrades so I do it as a volunteerthing where you’re educatingkids and building better peo-ple.

“I’m probably giving backwhat I got out of it.”

Mr Moss was living in Mel-bourne but a permanent camp-er on the Surf Coast when hefirst got involved at TorquayLife Saving Club where his 20-year stint earned him a longservice award.

“Then my wife and I boughta caravan at Jan Juc and then

that resulted in my transfer-ring clubs; I was given theopportunity to build the JanJuc club in a sporting sense,”he said.

“They didn’t have a coachso I went over there and putthe foundations in place whenI was in my mid-30s.

“Because Jan Juc is such agood family-orientated club Idecided to stay there.”
