ACTION NEEDED! In his annual budget, Governor Cuomo included a radical bill (S.7511) that would eliminate virtually all limitations on abortion in New York State. It would ensure that abortion is legal through all nine months of pregnancy, for any reason; it would allow for more late-term abortions, even though studies show that a fetus experiences pain at 20 weeks; it would eliminate the law that requires that a baby born alive after an abortion be given adequate healthcare, even though as many as 5 to10% of babies in late-term abortion are born alive; it would permit non-doctors to do abortions, which would endanger the health of women; and it would eliminate all criminal penalties for abortions - so even if an abortion was against a mother's will (involuntary or coerced), or if an unborn child is deliberately targeted for an act of violence, it could not be prosecuted. New York State already has far too many abortions. We don't need broader abortion laws - we need our law to respect human life at all stages. This is particularly dangerous because the law requires a budget to be passed by April 1. Please contact your state legislators to oppose this extreme bill. To do so, visit www.nyscatholic.org and click on "Take Action." You can also go to www.newyorkersforlife.org to keep up on the latest developments.
DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY Begin the Divine Mercy Novena on Good Friday, March 30. Please use the red pamphlets in the rear of the church. Divine Mercy Devotion on Sunday, April 8 at 3:00pm in the church. More information to fol-low!
Please come and pray the Rosary every Sunday at 7:30am
before the 8:00am Mass.
Next Sunday, April 1 is food pantry Sunday. Please be as generous as you can to help the needy of our community.

Suggested do-nation: $15 (participants keep all distributed music) For more information, please speak with Father George.

As was announced late last week, Lisa Ferraro will be stepping down as principal of St. John School, ef-fective this Wednesday, March 28; this will give her the opportunity to tend to a chronic health issue. In her nearly two years at the helm, Mrs. Ferraro has effected many significant and important changes and improvements, especially in the areas of Catholic identity, curriculum, and instruction. I know Mrs. Fer-raro would be most grateful for our prayers for her, especially during this transition. Though she won’t be occupying the principal’s chair, she will still be a visible presence in our community, both as a parish-ioner and a school parent. At the same time, we are happy to welcome Mr. Dustyn Cormier as the interim principal of SJS. Until now, Mr. Cormier has served as assistant principal of Kington Catholic School, where he previously was a teacher. Please join me in extending a warm welcome to Mr. Cormier.

It has been some time since I’ve shared an update on the projects which are part of the Renew+Rebuild capital campaign.
The expansion of the church narthex (vestibule), to include the addition of a confessional and lavatory, is slated for later this year. As I write, we are waiting on the architect for final plans, including cost esti-mates. Once those are in hand (which I hope is very, very soon), we will need to submit a “request for authorization” to those archdiocesan offices responsible for overseeing such projects. Despite some much-needed streamlining, the process is still somewhat time-intensive, so I hope that between favors owed and some dogged persistence, we can get approval quickly, and then move on to bidding out the work.
We recently met with representatives from the Keck Group; this is a Middletown-based firm which spe-cializes in the restoration of church pews. Among other things, they recently completed the restoration of every pew at St. Patrick’s Cathedral; they also handled the refinishing of our church doors. Very shortly, they will remove one of the worst-looking of the side (“two-seater”) pews from the church, take it to their workshop, and restore it. This will give us a pretty good idea of whether or not it will be both possible and cost-effective to treat all of the pews in this manner. (They are also going to make some repairs to the pews in the chapel; this is not part of the campaign work.) While the replacement of the vinyl tiles in the aisles is a given, they took a look at the hardwood floor under the pews; we need to further examine it to determine its restorability. As it stands, it’s my intention to see this work (in addition to painting) com-pleted in 2019, which will require us to be out of the church for some time. To that end, we are not tak-ing requests for weddings from mid-June 2019 until the end of that year. Better we budget too much time for this work than too little.
While we’re on the topic of Renew+Rebuild…..I believe that some parishioners who made pledges and are current with them have erroneously received “overdue pledge” letters from the campaign office. If you have received one or more such letters, and are, in fact, up-to-date on your pledge, please give the parish office a call; we’re working with those responsible to correct the errors. In the meantime, I reiterate my gratitude to all who have made pledges. The fruits of your generosity are already visible in the new school windows; hopefully, before long, you’ll start to see it in the church as well. I wish you a blessed and grace-filled Holy Week and Triduum! Faithfully your priest, Fr. George Hafemann
