My section of a group presentation to the 2012 CUNY IT Conference entitled: The Online Journal System: Implications for Scholarly Publishing in CUNY. Beth will speak more to her direct experience learning the system as an editor! For the editor: Get submissions online w/detailed checklist filled out by author Can create custom review form Assign reviewers from internal db Sends out standard emails as article goes through each step of editorial process Assign copyeditors, layout editors Image (Jean Stafford: http://www.flickr.com/photos/smithsonian/6891657541/)

Hosting from Office of Library Services, moving to Graduate Center next year
History: html Joomla OJS
Online editorial process finally used [yay!] after initial set up in 2009
Most challenging task for journal manager (other than learning OJS!): expedited uploading of back issues—tons of metadata creation, manager needs to enroll as editor & author
Here are some screenshots going from public view to backend …

For the author: uploading a submission. After uploading the submission, the author then enters metadata including affiliation, abstract, indexing keywords, etc.
Practical considerations
• Server available access/budget
• Will editors, copyeditors, and/or reviewers have time to learn the system?
• Back issue creation onerous although expediting uploading saves a little time
