THE JUDGES
Mareth K. Kipp, Moraine Airedale TerriersI have bred and owned Airedales for a good portion of my life. Our first was very much a pet, and probably not purebred, but she started us on the path to find something better. We were lucky enough to purchase a very well bred bitch and as they say, the rest is history. We bred over 85 champions to date and wonderful companions as well. We have had two Best in Show winners as well as national, regional and local specialty winners. As with many other tried-and-true dog people, at one time or another, we have also owned a Smooth and Wire Fox Terrier, a Norfolk and Norwich, a Lakeland and a Pointer. However my first love has always been the Airedale.
I started judging over 30 years ago and have judged our national specialty several times as well as the Airedale Terrier Club of Canada National Specialty. It is always very special to me when I am asked to judge national specialty shows for breeds other than Airedales, and I have been lucky enough to have been asked often to do just that.
The dogs have been very good to me in that I have had the opportunity to travel the world. I have walked The Great Wall in China, toured the Forbidden City in China as well, spent time in Australia and New Zealand, toured around Buenos Aires, Argentina as well as Bogota, Colombia in South America, many countries in Europe and one of my crowning judging assignments was in South Africa where following the show, I was taken on a five-day safari in Krueger National Park – what an experience.
I also have a wonderful private life. We have a dairy farm in Southeast Wisconsin, four grown children and five super grandchildren. I love to cook, and bake, knit and read and I also love to volunteer at our hospital in the Recovery Room. As you can see, I don’t sit around a lot wondering what to do with my life, I have found many things to keep me occupied.
Judy Colan, Colsidex Weimaraners Although my breeding program for the past 40-plus years has been limited, average one litter a year, I am proud to say that Colsidex is the home of the 2 All-Time Top Winners, 33 Best in Shows and 27 Best in Shows, as well as the All-Time Top-Producing BROM Sire, 147 champions. Proudly displayed on my wall are the plaques honouring my four WCA Hall of Farme inductees, as well as the 64 Pewter Dogs for Futurity/Maturity winners. This past year my Maturity-winning bitch, Ch. Colsidex Seabreeze Beyond Words, was the winner of the WCA Top 20 held in conjunction with the national specialty.
I have judged national specialties in Brazil, Ireland, Australia, New Zealnd and the US. The AKC honoured me in 2009 as Sporting Group Breeder of the Year.

Terry Miller, Deja Vu BriardsI graduated from college in Philadelphia with a degree in Fine Arts. I applied my education in painting and drawing to training dogs, which I have been doing full time ever since.
Looking for comic relief from my work training Hearing Ear Dogs and counseling owners with problem dogs, I set out to find a breed that suited my interest in showing my own dogs and required less grooming than the Standard Poodles I had at the time. The less grooming concept flew out the window when I realized that the breed that held the most interest was the very hairy Briard.
In 1982, I got my first Briard for conformation after having shown in obedience for several years. This dog, Ch. Phydeaux Take The Money N Run, at 13 months old was BOS at the Briard Club of America National in 1983. At the same National, my first foundation bitch, Ch. Aigner Teatotaller ROM, was Winners Bitch from the 9-12 Class.
I began in the breed with three foundation bitches, Tetley, Tosha and Tinsel, who I am still breeding down from and relying on in various ways to contribute to the constant genetic reinforcements to the Deja Vu family of dogs.
Deja Vu Briards has bred/owned over 275 Champions. In their ranks are 13 Best In Show dogs, 49 group winners, over 50 specialty winners, 10 National Specialty winners, 5 Westminster Group Placers, several Number One All Systems Briards, multiple Top Ten Herding Group dogs and many dogs with performance titles in obedience, herding, rally and agility. We are home to the two most famous Briards in the United States show ring – Ch. Deja Vu In Like Flynn CD PT and his daughter Ch. Deja Vu Ruffles Have Ridges PT. They are the top-winning male and female of all time in the history of the breed.
Ch. Flynn is the top sire of all time in history. Flynn’s son, Ch. Deja Vu Up Close & Personal is the second top-producing sire of all time. Flynn’s dam Ch. Deja Vu Four Leaf Clover HOF ROMX is the top brood bitch of all time. Each of them have themselves been winners at specialties and have produced winners at specialties.
In 2013, #1 All Systems and # 6 in the Herding Group was Ch. Deja Vu Mia Cool As A Cucumber. Just starting, ‘Dill’ had a great year with BOB at the National Specialty, 41 Group 1sts and 7 Best In Shows. He comes back to the U.S. from a career as #1 Herding Dog and #5 All Breeds in Mexico.
A fun fact is our family connection with Norman the Scooter Dog. Seen on most tv networks and news and entertainment shows (Letterman, Good Morning America, The Today Show, etc.), Norman is sired by our own Ch. Popsakadoo Deja Vu Bono and his dam Tessa, is co-bred by me. In 2007, I was nominated and then chosen as Outstanding Breeder of The Year by Dogs In Review Magazine, Bowtie Publications and Purina. It was an immensely gratifying award given the fact that it is voted on by the dog fancy of exhibitors and judges across the United States and only one is chosen.
I am currently a long-standing member of the Briard Club of America Breed Education Committee and serve on the Illustrated Standard creation committee. I am also currently the president of the Atlantic States Briard Club.
I live in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, with my partner and fellow long-time accomplished Briard breeder and handler, Dominique Dube, native of Quebec. We breed under the Deja Vu/Popsakadoo kennel prefixes.
I received the WCA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. I have served as AKC Delegate for the WCA for the past 22 years as well as the past WCA National Show Chairman for nine years.
