The Woodward Celebrates ItsCentennial Year

This October, wecelebrate thecentennial year of thehistoric WoodwardWight building.Opened in 1912, the

structure was built of concrete withlarge Etruscan columns as the mainstructural support. Home toWoodward Wight & Co. the buildinghoused the executive offices alongwith hundreds of employees whooperated as the largest hardwaresupplier in the Southeast. They hadeight warehouses in the immediatearea and they had a slogan, “We selleverything from needles tolocomotives.”

The Company thrived in businessfor 67 years but with the changingtimes, found itself obsolete and closedin the mid ’70s. At the same time, theonce thriving industrial area, foundmany businesses closing andbuildings abandoned. New Orleanswas left with its version of Skid Row.

Anniversary of the Woodward LoftApartments.

The festivities will begin at7:30 p.m. in the building Atrium. Therewill be delightful catered food andbeverages presented by the folks atPigeon Catering. Pres Kabacoff andothers yet to be named will speak atthe event sharing stories and laughsabout the past 25 years ofdevelopment along the historic NewOrleans’ riverfront.

Afterwards, the party will proceedto the famous Woodward rooftop for ajazz band performance and a good oldfashioned second line. All residentsare especially invited to join TheWoodward staff for a night of music,food and fun to remember.

Hurricane IssacThis summer’s hurricane, Isaac,

was thought to be a measly Category1 Hurricane. However, it ended upstalling over our city for 36 hours, withpounding rain and wind to the southside of our building. Throughout thestorm, residents gathered in the lobbyand made the best of it.

Many apartments were adversely

affected with water intrusion butresidents were at the ready. Oneengineer resident even built anartificial dam to curtail the water. Ithought that was brilliant!

I want to thank all residents fortheir tenacity and positive spirit duringthis ordeal. Special thanks to Christinafor organizing the “HurricaneLobby Bar.”

The Woodward Lofts Celebrates 25 Years

Atrium of the Woodward Lofts

In 1980, HRI founders, Ed Boettner and Pres Kabacoff, had avision for New Orleans’ riverfront. Having seen developed riverfrontsof other cities, they saw the potential for derelict zones to come aliveonce again. Urban renewal experts talked about how it would take 25years to reach saturation. So, with vision in hand and risk in pocket,they purchased the Woodward Wight building and proceeded tore-develop it into loft apartments.

Some might recall the oil crash of the early 80s and hownegatively this impacted downtown New Orleans. It was a difficult andrisky time to finance such a project and it was not until five years laterthat construction actually began.

The construction process took about 20 months to complete. Theentire atrium area was created by cutting out the concrete floors oneach level. The concept of bringing natural light into the center of thebuildings allowed for maximum design efficiency with doubled loadedcorridors. The atrium units were allowed a balcony while the exteriorunits offered the exposed masonry walls. The double helix packagechute exists today as a sculpture and testimony to the buildings past.

The Woodward Lofts today is an exceptional community. As aresult of 25 years in operation, the property has achieved therecognition of many in the community and the industry. Thanks to theefforts of all of our staff through the years, and the support of ourwonderful residents, the Woodward Lofts has become one of themost sought-after living spaces in the city.
