General Background

• Supermarket sector in Argentina has consistentlygrown and future growth is expected

• Preventive maintenance of refrigeration systems isnot always performed by well trained staff

• Refrigerant leaks are high and growing.

Objective

To reduce refrigerant leaks, measure cooling energy consumption and check the impact on energy efficiency and refrigerant

consumption of the interventions introduced, to demonstrate the importance of good preventive maintenance practices

• Leak prevention is crucial not only for directenvironmental benefits but also for reduction ofenergy consumption.

• Since these issues are not carefully addressed bymost companies, their owners and the companymanagement are not aware neither of theenvironmental nor the economical impacts

Benefits expected

• Environment: Minimize ODS and green-house gasemissions to reduce the footprint of refrigerationsystems in the selected supermarkets.

• End User: Cost savings in the operation ofsupermarkets, by the reduction of refrigerant andenergy consumption

Supermarket Branches• 29 out of 53

• Leak rate > 30 %/yr

• Located in different climatic regions

• Pertaining to different chains (5)

• Different quality in maintenance practices

Geographical distribution of supermarkets

• Review and record the type and condition of their coolingequipment.

• Prepare expert recommendations and action plan for thereduction of refrigerant leaks and decrease of energyconsumption

StageII: follow-upvisits(altogether3visitstoeachsupermarket)to:

• Review the implementation of recommendations and actionplan specified in Stage I; and

• Check the functioning and readings of the installed monitors, working together with the maintenance staff of the store

• major findings;• lessons learnt;• bottlenecks;• costs incurred;• reduction of refrigerant use compared to the baseline;• energy savings compared to the baseline;• financial savings; and• resulting environment benefits

StageIII: PreparationofaFinalReportcontainingthefollowingconclusions

The contractor as well as supermarkets staff involved in the project implementation will

participate in a workshop to be organized by the Oficina Programa Ozono (OPROZ) to share the

project results with other supermarkets, commercial refrigeration service

companies and independent technicians
