HE IS RISEN From the pastor
St. Augustine Catholic Church Easter Sunday April 16, 2017
The New Testament states that the resurrection
of Jesus, which Easter celebrates, is a foundation
of the Christian faith. “… if Christ has not been
raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and
your faith has been in vain” 1 Cor.15:14. The res-
urrection established Jesus as the powerful Son of
God and is cited as proof that God will judge the
world in righteousness. For those who trust in Je-
sus' death and resurrection, "death is swallowed
up in victory." Any person who chooses to follow
Jesus receives "a new birth into a living hope
through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the
dead". Through faith in the working of God those
who follow Jesus are spiritually resurrected with
Him so that they may walk in a new way of life and
receive eternal salvation.
Easter is linked to the Passover and the Exodus
from Egypt recorded in the Old Testament through
the Last Supper, and the sufferings and crucifixion
of Jesus that preceded the resurrection. According
to the New Testament, Jesus gave the Passover
meal a new meaning, as in the upper room during
the Last Supper He prepared Himself and His dis-
ciples for His death. He identified the matzah and
cup of wine as His body soon to be sacrificed and
His blood soon to be shed. Paul states, "Get rid of
the old yeast that you may be a new batch without
yeast—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover
lamb, has been sacrificed"; this refers to the Pass-
over requirement to have no yeast in the house
and to the allegory of Jesus as the Paschal lamb.
What does the resurrection of Christ mean for
me? It opens up a giant possibility for humanity
and for each one of us. An allegory to help us un-
derstand the resurrection would be the contribution
of the Wright Brothers to air travel. Traveling
through air (fly like a bird) has been in the imagina-
tion of humanity nearly from the dawn of human
history. The Veemaan mentioned in the great In-
dian epic Ramayana (4th century BC.) and the
magic carpets from Arabian Nights or One Thou-
sand and One Nights (8th century AD) bears testi-
mony to it. But the great opening came when
Wright Brothers made the first controlled, sus-
tained flight of a powered, heavier-than-air aircraft
on December 17, 1903, four miles south of Kitty
Hawk, North Carolina. It was just about 120 feet, 12
second flight that was just 10 feet above ground.

Salvation, life after death, eternal life, etc. has
been part of human lore from time immemorial. The
resurrection of Jesus made it real and possible.
Happy Easter and the blessing of the risen Lord.

~ Look here for exciting opportunities to get involved in serving others in our community. “I
prefer a Church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather
than a Church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security.”
Joy of the Gospel, Pope Francis #49

: From the desk of the Ministry Coordinator
Times are hard today, but times have always been
hard
“We do well to keep in mind the early Christians and our many brothers and sisters throughout history who were filled with joy, unflagging courage and zeal in proclaiming the Gos-pel. Some people nowadays console themselves by saying that things are not as easy as they used to be, yet we know that the Roman empire was not conducive to the Gospel message, the struggle for justice, or the defense of human dignity. Every period of history is marked by the presence of human weakness, self-absorption, complacency and selfish-ness, to say nothing of the concupiscence which preys upon us all. These things are ever present under one guise or an-other; they are due to our human limits rather than particu-lar situations. Let us not say, then, that things are harder to-day; they are simply different. But let us learn also from the saints who have gone before us, who confronted the difficul-ties of their own day. So I propose that we pause to redis-cover some of the reasons which can help us to imitate them today.” (Pope Francis, Joy of the Gospel (263)
