June 2011 NewsletterNews from the office…
June has arrived and with it a few staff changes for next year. Mrs Koroscil (Middle Years Support Teacher), Mr. Homenick (Physical Education Teacher), and Mrs. Dzogan (Paraprofessional) are retiring at the end of this month. We wish all of them well as they begin another stage of their lives and we thank them for their many contributions to our school and to our division over the years. We would like to welcome a few new staff next year: Ms. Robinson as a Grade 7/8 teacher and Ms. Davey who will work both as a Support teacher and Guidance Counsellor. We also have current staff who will remain with us but in different capacities. Ms. Transi is stepping into the role of Support Teacher next year. Ms. Transi is a familiar face at OVJ after having taught Grade 5 for many years. We welcome Mr. Kashty who will be one of our Grade 5 classroom teachers next year. Mrs. Hosfield and Mrs. Veitch are both returning next year, but each as full time Grade 4 teachers. Lastly, our Physical Education program will be staffed by Mrs. Pereira and Mr. Lopez. As we continue to grow in population, we await the delivery of three portable classrooms which will be located in the Middle Years field area. The additional space next fall is certainly welcome!
Our garden area is blooming and we thank the classrooms that helped us with the planting this spring. We also thank Ms. Toupin and Mrs. Parsons for their many hours of hard work in preparing our flower beds for planting. Also thanks to many of our families in the Family Centre who have volunteered to take a turn over the summer caring for our gardens. This place is a
wonderful area to enjoy on a summer evening and we appreciate all the help we receive in keeping it looking so nice! We continue to move ahead with plans for our Natural Playscape and we know this will be a lovely addition to the front of our school. We’d like to wish staff, students and their families a safe and restful summer break. Orientation days will be on September 6th and 7th, 2011. The first day of regular classes will be on September 8th, 2011. Have a great summer!
Bob McIntosh Beth Heimbecker Principal Vice-Principal
THANK YOU! Thanks to Chuck’s Landscaping for providing us with soil and river rock at a reduced cost for the planters in front of our school. Also thanks to Aaron & the Gosselin family and Doug’s Roofing for donating a bicycle
to our Parent Teacher Association as a silent auction prize at our community barbeque.

Every month at O. V. Jewitt Community School we feature a different quality that we feel is valuable. During the month we ask students to think about, and demonstrate that quality. This theme will be celebrated at our monthly assemblies. In June, our assembly will take place on Tuesday, June 28th at 9:30 a.m. Parents are welcome to attend.

A FRIENDLY REMINDER…
Parents and/or guardians: Part of our safety plan for children is monitoring the
playground to ensure that strangers do not approach children while in our care.
Paraprofessionals have been instructed not to allow adults to approach students without
authorization from the office. If you need to speak with your child during recess or
lunch hour, please report to the office and we will locate your child and have him or her
meet you in the office.

Thank you to all families who were able to join us for
our planting evening on May 17th. We enjoyed some beautiful sunny weather and watched the children
(and those of us young at heart) digging in the dirt, planting tomato plants, peas, and herbs. The children
will now watch their plants grow at home, hopefully yielding some veggies and herbs that they can eat.
This experience will help them truly gain a better
understanding of where our food comes from!
Once the weather warms up a bit, we will be planting some vegetables in the planters in the front
of the school. Some classrooms have already planted
some vegetables inside and are anxiously waiting to move them outside. We are looking for some
volunteers to help with weeding and watering over the summer. If you would like to volunteer your
family to come once during the summer holidays to
do some watering, please call Cathy Foy or Chris Turnbull at O.V. Jewitt school 633-1714. Also, if you are out on a walk with your family, drop by the front of
the school. If you happen to see some weeds growing amongst our plants, just pull them out!
Chris Turnbull Cathy Foy Community Coordinator Learning Support Teacher
Arts in the Park 2011 was a huge success! Six performing groups from OVJ School participated in this division-wide event. Bravo to all the students and volunteers who took part. More than 8,000 students from kindergarten through grade 12 performed.
OVJ Idol is coming up on June 28th; details to come.

Thank you to our

SOME IMPORTANT SAFETY REMINDERS…
You may have noticed our portable signs that indicate our bus loading zones. Thank you for dropping off children outside of this zone. Please remember
not to drop your child off on the opposite side of the street so that he/she must cross either behind or in front of your car or exit
into oncoming traffic in order to reach the school grounds. In addition, please do not drop your children off or pick them up in the school parking lot. For safety reasons, children should not walk through the parking lot. Your help will also keep this area free from traffic congestion.
NOT RETURNING IN THE FALL? Please let the office know (as soon as possible) if your child/children will
not be returning to O.V. Jewitt School in September 2011. Thanks!

IMPORTANT NOTICE
WATER SAFETY FOR STUDENTS
Reminder to students:
Swim with a buddy
Know your limits – swim a safe distance and duration
Younger students and weaker swimmers should always be watched by a parent or supervisor. If you are not within arms’ reach, you’ve gone too far into the water.
Familiarize yourself with the water before diving or swimming.
Weaker swimmers and young children should always wear a lifejacket or personal flotation device – this is not a substitute for staying within arms’ reach.
Tha best way to be safe in or near the water is to learn to swim.
