Examples of addition word problems

Example. Jenny has 7 marbles and Kenny has 5. How

many do they have together?

“Together” tells us that ADDITION is probably the

operation needed.

Jenny's marbles + Kenny's marbles = Total marbles

From this general relationship between the quantities it is

easy to write an equation for the problem, which solves it:

Relationship: Jenny's marbles + Kenny's

marbles = Total marbles

Equation: 7 + 5 = _____

I wrote ____ in the place of total marbles since that is what

the problem is asking for (the unknown).

Examples of subtraction word problems Example: Ted read 17 pages today, and Fred read 28. How many more pages did Fred read?

The  solution  is  of  course  28  −  17  =  11,  but  it's  not  enough  to

simply announce that – children need also to understand that difference is the result of a subtraction and tells the answer to how many more.

Relationship: Pages Fred read − pages Ted

read = difference

Equation: 28 − 17 = __

Example: Greg has 17 more marbles than Jack. Jack has

15. How many does Greg have?

Here the word more has a different meaning. This problem is not about the difference. The question asks how many does Greg have – not what is the difference in the amounts of marbles. It simply states Greg has 17 more compared to Jack, so here the word more simply indicates addition: Greg has as many as Jack AND 17 more, so Greg has 15 + 17 marbles.

Can you think of an addition word problem??

WALT: Make number stories to represent sums. You are writing a book on word problems. You have the sums but you now need to make sentences to go with them. Example: Sum; 6.83 x 27 = 184.41 Sentence; 27 CDs at £6.83 each will cost £184.41 Now your turn: (tip; don’t always use CD’s!) 143.5 + 32.45 = 175.95 57.2 – 2.56 = 54.64

448.91 ÷ 53 = 8.47

377 x 58 = 21,866

26 x 3.5 = 91

689 ÷ 137.8 = 5

Maths Challenge Can you work out which operation (+, – , ÷, x) is missing from each sum? ? 377 58 = 435 ? 377 58 = 6.5 ? 377 58 = 319 ? 377 58 = 21,866

WALT: Make number stories to represent sums. You are writing a book on word problems. You have the sums but you now need to make sentences to go with them. Example: Sum; 564 ÷ 8 = 70.5 Sentence; If you cut 8 equal pieces from 564mm of string, each piece will be 70.5 mm long. Now your turn: (tip; don’t always use string!) 1435 + 3245 = 4680 38.7 x 24 = 928.8

572 – 25 = 547

25.3 x 84 = 2125.2

26 x 3.5 = 91

689 ÷ 137.8 = 5

Maths Challenge Can you work out which operation (+, – , ÷, x) is missing from each sum? ? 319 274 = 593 ? 18 6 = 108 ? 572 291 = 281 ? 228 38 = 6

WALT: Make number stories to represent sums. You are writing a book on word problems. You have the sums but you now need to make sentences to go with them. Example: Sum; 90 x 4 = 360 Sentence; Four portions of fries at 90p each would cost £3.60 or 360p. Now your turn: (tip; don’t always use fries!) 435 + 245 = 680 72 – 25 = 47

93 ÷ 3 = 31

23 x 4 = 92

532 + 247 = 779

Maths Challenge Can you work out which operation (+, – , ÷, x) is missing from each sum? ? 19 21 = 40 ? 72 29 = 43 ? 80 6 = 480 ? 28 2 = 14
