How does a leader lead best? We have three
examples of leadership in our patriarchs. Abraham
embodies hesed, or loving-kindness. He defends the
people of Sodom and Gomorrah when G-d wants to
destroy them, asking “Will you sweep away the
innocent along with the guilty?” Abraham also
embodies “radical hospitality,” rushing to greet three
men who visit his tent despite the pain he was feeling
from his circumcision. Yet there is something lacking in
Abraham at the same time. He rushes to Sarah and
has her drop everything she is doing in order to feed
the men. He hurries to Mount Moriah with his son Isaac
as a sacrifice, almost killing him before an angel
intercedes. Abraham is “anxious to please,” pleasing
others while neglecting the needs of his family.
In contrast to Abraham, Isaac embodies
gevurah, which I choose to translate as resilience.
Despite the trauma of almost being sacrificed by his
father, Isaac marries Rebecca and fathers two
children, Jacob and Esau. He chooses to put aside the
anguish, the hurt that a beloved father would kill him to
placate G-d and begins a new generation. Yet some of
the Isaac’s trauma remains; he is permanently scarred.
Isaac becomes a passive character, manipulated by
Rebecca and Jacob. In Parshat VaYetze, Jacob says
“the fear of Isaac” (Genesis 31:42) and pahad Yitzhak
is a way I understand our patriarch. He was too afraid
to act and thus he became the object of other people’s
actions.
Jacob’s approach is the one I think leaders
should emulate. Yes, Jacob the kniver, who took
Esau’s birthright for a bowl of stew. According to
tradition, Jacob embodies emet, truth. He is a visionary
who begins with the end in mind, receiving the
birthright and blessing, and then seizes his opportunity
to attain them. Even with God Jacob has a plan. When
he is a refugee from his home, running in fear of his
brother Esau, using a stone for a pillow, Jacob vows
that he would believe in God only “If God remains with
me, if God protects me on this journey that I am
making and gives me bread to eat and clothing to
wear.” A leader needs to be able to speak his/her truth
with conviction while also being receptive to those of
others. Being in active dialogue about what we need
and doing things not because they are popular but
because they are right (having the courage of our
convictions) is the hallmark of effective leadership.
In her article “Why the Most Successful
Leaders Don’t Care About Being Liked,” my former life
coach Deborah Grayson-Riegel wrote “When does
wanting to be liked become a problem? When it
comes at the expense of being respected.
According to scientist Cameron Anderson of the Haas
School of Business at the University of California,
Berkeley, overall happiness in life is related to how
much you are respected by those around you.
Nevertheless, when we sacrifice what it takes to be
respected for the quicker, and often easier, win of
feeling liked, we lose out on the benefits that respect
yields. She concludes by saying, “For professionals
who want to grow in their roles and careers, being liked
is good, but being respected is a requirement. As
Margaret Thatcher once remarked, "If you just set out
to be liked, you would be prepared to compromise on
anything at any time, and you would achieve nothing."
This is a truth (like the truth of Jacob) that I
wish I had internalized at the beginning of my tenure at
Jericho Jewish Center. I share it now as a model for
how I hope to function as your rabbi during my
remaining time at JJC.

Leadership
4
In my professional career I have been fortunate to
have been exposed to and learned from many
clients who have significant charitable inclinations.
A client made a consequential donation as seed
money for a Jewish geriatric center not far from
Jericho, and then similar gifts to finance Israeli
satellites to be launched into space. Another
participates in micro funding of startup projects in
Israel while another founded an institute whose
chief efforts focus on enhancing social justice.
These donors all have at least one interest in
common with one another. All of these
benefactors, whether they consciously knew it or
not, participated in the highest level of charity
according to Maimonides. Added to this list are
Neil and Sherry Cohen who have so generously
donated a Sefer Torah to the Jericho Jewish
Center.
What is the highest level of charity? The
greatest level, above which there is no greater, is
to support someone by endowing him with a gift or
loan, in order to strengthen his hand, so that he
will not need to be dependent on others.
By Neil and Sherry Cohen making this
generous gift to the Jericho Jewish Center in
honor of Harriet and Norman Cohen, they
have provided the members of our
congregation the opportunity to perform their
own mitzvah of writing a Torah. The Cohens
are the catalyst to whom we are grateful, and
now our congregation has the chance to
capitalize on their generosity. Thank you for
the resources given us and for the challenge
provided to us. It is our obligation to use the
Torah which the Cohens have funded to buy
books, portions, chapters, verses, words and
letters to do honor to our loved ones and to
show gratitude for the blessings we enjoy, all
for the benefit of our synagogue. We have
been given the chance to not be dependent on
others, but to take responsibility into our own
hands.
I am also appreciative of the participation of
the members of the Jericho Jewish Center
who are so generously engaged in this effort
and have enthusiastically taken up the
challenge that Neil and Sherry Cohen have
offered us. Please join us.

Year End tax planning
As the end of the tax year is approaching, there are several tax efficient opportunities that you might want to
consider for making your contributions to the Jericho Jewish Center.
If you are age 70 ½ or older you can make contributions directly from your IRA to our synagogue. You will not
be taxed on the amount transferred from your IRA to the Jericho Jewish Center, and your gift will be
considered part of your required minimum distribution.
Additionally, you can contribute appreciated securities from your personal portfolio directly to the synagogue.
Your tax deduction is the fair market value of the donation on the date of the gift, and you don’t pay tax on the
appreciation.
A donor advised fund may be appropriate for your charitable profile.
Many congregants have used the methods described above. If any of these techniques appeal to you, please
consult your tax advisor to make sure that the donations are properly executed. I would be happy to discuss
any of these options with you as well.

After a long wait for all the Chagim to end, we finally resumed Religious School. Our Blessing
of the Pets again was a fun activity. Many families brought their dogs, no cats or lizards this year,
but we did welcome a guinea pig.
Friday Night Live (celebrated the second Friday of each month) came alive with students,
parents, grandparents, and friends all coming together to celebrate Shabbat with a Chinese dinner
followed by our Ruach filled service. We celebrated Ryan Smiler and his Bar Mitzvah at this month’s
FNL dinner and service.
Mazal Tov to Ryan Smiler and Maya Akiva for becoming Bar/Bat Mitzvah this month. Kol
HaKavod to you and your families.
Shabbat Alive (celebrated the first Shabbat morning of each month) is our family friendly
learning service. Students lead many parts of the service as well as having opportunities to come to
the Torah for an Aliyah….all for learning. Since this month was the very first Torah portion
(Beresheit), most student and adults were able to come up and see the very first word of the Torah!!
This month we were also fortunate to have a presentation by Bar Reuven and his IDF friends
from the Elite Unit 669. They are unbelievable individuals who after serving in very difficult times
were able to pay it forward in incredible ways. If you would like to make a donation, please let me
know and I will forward their information to you.
Upcoming events:
Thursday, November 1: Noa (our Shinshinit) will be
teaching an Adult Education class about Yitzchak
Rabin at 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary
Saturday, November 3: Shabbat Alive at 11:00 am in the
Beit Midrash
Tuesday, November 6: Bar/Bat Mitzvah orientation by
invitation

The 613th commandment of the Torah is to write a Torah. Even writing one letter of the
Torah fulfills this mitzvah.
Every single congregant at Jericho Jewish Center now has the opportunity to fulfill this
mitzvah!!
Jericho Jewish Center will be getting a new sefer Torah in memory of Harriet and Norman
Cohen, z”l.
With this new Torah, we will have many
learning and donation opportunities.
The Religious School will be spearheading our first campaign. We will be collecting 304,805 pennies! Why? That is the exact number of letters written in a complete Torah.
So start bringing your pennies in!!
Mitzvah 613: Writing a Sefer Torah
“And now, write for yourselves this song, and teach it to the Children of Israel. Place it into their mouths, in order that this song will be for Me as a witness for the children of Israel.” (Deuteronomy 31:19). While this is referring to the song of Haazinu near the end of the Torah, The Talmud (Nedarim 38a) has taken this to refer to the commandment for every Jew to write his/her own Sefer Torah (Torah scroll).
It is a special skill to write a Torah, and it takes on average a year to do so. As many of us have other vocations, how then can we fulfill this command? According to Rabbi Moses Isserles (the Rema), we fulfill it by writing at least one letter in the Torah (Yoreh Deah 270:1 based off Menachot 30a).
During the 2018-19 synagogue year, each of us will have the opportunity to fulfill this Mitzvah, thanks to the generosity of Neil and Sherry Cohen. Neil’s parents, Norman and Harriet z”l were members of the Jericho Jewish Center for almost 60 years. When Norman z”l passed away last year, Neil and Sherry sought to honor him through a gift to his spiritual home, the Jericho Jewish Center. Their generosity enables us to acquire a new Torah at JJC, a welcome addition, as most of our Torot are heavy and a number of them are pasul (unfit for ritual use). Each of us will have the opportunity to fulfill this commandment by donating for a letter, a word or a more substantial gift to be given in memory of a loved one or in honor of a simcha. All donors will receive a certificate of appreciation for their donation, will get to write a letter in the Torah and will have a photo taken with the scribe as this is done.
Please send your gift in to the Jericho Jewish Center and indicate that it is for the Mitzvah 613 Torah campaign. Also please inform your family and friends, inviting them to contribute to our new Torah. Let us know if you are interested in participating in our Mitzvah 613 committee: we are looking for creative minds to plan educational programs around the Torah. Lastly, please indicate if it is in honor of a simcha or in memory of a loved
one so that we can acknowledge it appropriately. You can donate online: www.jerichojc.com/mitzvah613/

JERICHO JEWISH CENTER SIMCHA TREE
The Simcha Tree leaves can be purchased to commemorate a Simcha such as the birth of a grandchild, a Bar / Bat Mitzvah, or to honor a special birthday. A leaf can be purchased for any happy occasion. Your message will be engraved on the leaf. Choose a spot and the leaf is installed. This is a lovely way to support the Jericho Jewish center and honor your dear one. The cost of a leaf is $250.00. The “CHAI” stones are $1,800. I look forward to hearing from you. Shirley Grubin 516-342-9179
