ArtsHofeldt-Phillips Piano Trio at St. Paul’s Nov. 15

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church ArtistSeries continues on Saturday, Nov.15, at 4 p.m. with the Hofeldt-PhillipsPiano Trio and special guest ClaraHofeldt in a wide-ranging chamberprogram that features some buriedtreasure and a musical mystery.

The Hofeldt-Phillips Piano Trio(Betsey Hofeldt, violin; MarkHofeldt, cello; Stephen Phillips, piano) was founded when its mem-bers met while pursuing graduatestudies at the Cincinnati CollegeConservatory of Music. They haveperformed throughout the MiamiValley at the Dayton Art Institute, theCincinnati Art Museum, MiamiUniversity, Earlham College, theUniversity of Dayton, Wright StateUniversity, the Music on the Avenueseries in Newport, KY, and other areamusic series. Betsey and Mark aremembers of the Dayton PhilharmonicOrchestra, and Stephen collaborateswith vocalists and instrumentalists inthe Cincinnati area.

Special guest Clara Hofeldt, thedaughter of Betsey and Mark, is asophomore at Oakwood High Schooland a distinguished violinist in herown right. She studies with

Cincinnati Symphony assistant con-certmaster, Eric Bates, is first violin-ist with the Blackbird String Quartet, and was a winner in the Oakwood’sGot Talent competition held at theOakwood Centennial closing cere-monies. Clara and her sister Ingridare co-directors of Giving Strings, anorchestra of professional, amateurand student musicians who annuallypresent a concert in Oakwood to raisemoney for local children’s charities.

The buried treasure on the pro-gram is the Trio No. 2 in D Minor byCzech-born composer BohuslavMartinu, who fled his native land atthe start of World War II and madehis home in the United States.Martinu’s work, which weaves mod-ern sensibilities with the melodicinfluences of Czech folk songs andEnglish madrigals, is a favorite of theHofeldt-Phillips Trio, but to bringthis little heard work to Dayton audi-ences the musicians had to hunt up ascarce copy of the score, last pub-lished in the early 1960s. Their questled to the music library at OberlinCollege, where a circulating copywas located. The concert at St. Paul’swill coincide with a celebration of

Martinu’s musical legacy takingplace in Prague, the beloved capitalfrom which the composer remainedin exile all his life.

Another program highlight—anda musical puzzle— is the BrahmsSonatensatz, the scherzo movementfrom a collaborative work known asthe F-A-E Sonata. Brahms,Schumann, and Albert Dietrich werecommissioned to write movementsfor this sonata in honor of the violin-ist Joseph Joachim. The sonata takesits title from the initials of Joachim’sRomantic German motto, Frei AberEinsam (“Free, but lonely”), and thehonoree was asked to guess whichcomposer was responsible for whichpart—a puzzle he had no troublesolving. The full sonata is rarelyheard today, but the Brahms scherzoremains a popular part of the cham-ber repertoire.

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church ArtistSeries is a musical outreach to thecommunity, featuring magnificentmusic in sacred space. All are wel-come, and a reception will follow theconcert. A free will offering will betaken to benefit St. Paul’s music min-istry.
