2021 Spring Semester COVID AI Challenge
• Challenge: Use AI to solve a COVID19 issue
• Examples:– Determine if a person is wearing a mask– Hotspot tracking– Touch and sneeze detector and log– Delivery Safety– AI powered Teaching Assistant
• Challenge designed to use Edge Computing Nvidia Development board (provided by Northrop Grumman)
• Teams of 2-4 UMD students may apply to compete

Competition Overview• Create an AI application that can help solve a real world COVID related issue• Project Deliverables:
– AI Application to test– Final Presentation (10 mins. w/ Q&A)

• March 8th – Kickoff Meeting
• April 15th – Mentor Midpoint meeting
• May 7th – Final Exposition Meeting

Mentoring• Each team will be assigned a Northrop Grumman mentor
– Suggest a teleconference every 2 weeks, email/informal call in between
• Ways mentors can help:– Provide insight into Northrop Grumman business/application areas (Northrop
Grumman mentor)– Provide feedback on designs or technical questions– Discuss common design considerations

Judging and Scoring• Two aspects of the competition:
– (70%) Application Test• We will test each team’s applications to make sure they are functional and yield
consistent results– (30%) Innovation and Presentation
• Teams will give a presentation to the Judges outlining their AI application • Points will be awarded for innovation, ingenuity, and overall technical achievement
