How do we use the Past Continuous Tense?

we can use the Past Continuous to set the background for a story or tell about events in progress in the past . use the simple past for completed actions in the past.

The Past Continuous in affirmative sentences.

The Past Continuous in negative sentences.

The Past Continuous

in Yes/No Question.

The Past Continuous

in WH- Question.

The Past Continuous Tense

is classified in:

The Past Continuous in affirmative sentences.

The affirmative sentences in past continuous are form with: WAS / WERE + root verb + ING.

What´s the structure in the affirmative sentences?

Subject + was/were + verb + ing + complement.

Examples:

-Richard was doing his homework.

- Dan and Alex were playing tennis all day.

- Susan was cooking all morning.

Subject + was/were + verb + ing + complement.

The Past Continuous in negative sentences.

The negative sentences in past continuous is formed by putting NOT after WAS / WERE and before the main verb , also you can contract wasn´t and weren´t.

What´s the structure in the NEGATIVE sentences?

Subject + was/were + not + verb + ing + complement.

Examples:

- She wasn’t reading at 8 o’clock last night .

- They weren’t playing basketball.

- He was not walking all the week.

Subject + was/were + not + verb + ing + complement.

The Past Continuous in Yes/No Question.

To form questions such as yes / no in past continuous we have to change the order of subject and auxiliary verb (was / were), the rest of the sentence does not change.

What´s the structure in the Yes/No Question?

Was/were + subject+ verb + ing + complement + ?

Examples:Was/were + subject+ verb + ing + complement + ?

• Was he doing his homework?

• Were we buying many chocolates in the supermarkt?

The Past Continuous in WH-Question.

In these questions we must change the order of the subject and the auxiliary verb, as we did in the type yes / no, and replace the information we asked for the corresponding interrogative particle.

What´s the structure in the WH-Question?

Wh-question + was/were + subject + verb + ing + complement + ?

Examples:Wh-question + was/were + subject + verb

+ ing + complement + ?

• Who were you visiting last night?

• Where was she going when you met her?
