No plans to return to Indiathis year: Naik

MUMBAI, July 15:

Controversial Islamicpreacher Zakir Naik, facingmultiple probes over his allegedprovocative speeches, today saidhe has no plans to return to Indiathis year even as he claimed hisremarks were "blown out of con-text" and that he has neverinspired any terror activity.

The televangelist, who hadcancelled press meets thrice cit-ing pressure from authorities ofthe venues where they wereplanned, had a lengthy interac-tion with media via Skype fromSaudi Arabia, rubbishing thecharge that his sermons hadinspired terror activity, includ-ing the Dhaka attack.

Stating that he is a "messen-ger of peace", Naik said,"Killing innocent people is pro-hibited in Islam and I condemnall terrorist attacks" and that heis a victim of media trial with hisstatements being blown out ofcontext.

Referring to the footage ofsome of his speeches shown bymedia following the Dhaka car-nage, he said, "Indian media isrunning a trial against mebecause of unverified reports.Half sentences being shown,clips being doctored and state-ments being shown out of con-text to malign me."

"It is unethical for the mediato not take my answers on facevalue and doubt me. There aretwo thousand sentences in whichI condemned terrorism...Theremay be ten sentences in whichone may take out a doublemeaning...Videos are being doc-tored for ulterior motives...," hesaid.

When asked about one of hisspeeches in which he said thatsuicide bombing is permitted byIslam, he said, "it is haram ifinnocent people are being killed.But, if suicide bombing is usedas a tactic of war, then it may be

permitted. For example, inWorld War II, Japan used suicidebombing as a tactic of war."

To a query on the probe byMumbai police into his speech-es, he said, "So far no officialgovernment agency hasapproached me in the last 8-9days to ask me to cooperate intheir investigations. If they do, Iwill welcome it. I have neverhad any problems with govern-ments or police in the past. I amwilling to cooperate with anyinvestigation agency."

"There are some people inIslam misguiding people in thename of paradise after death.People are inspired by ProphetMohammed...But he never saidthat innocent should be killed.Similarly I never said kill inno-cent humans," Naik asserted.

Naik also spoke in detailabout his travel plans.

"As per my plans I will comeback to the country next year. Iwas not supposed to come backto India this year, I have realisedit is easier to answer queries onskype or video conferencing. Iam not running away but I havebeen very busy meeting impor-tant personalities. I am availableto authorities but as per my planI will come back next year," hesaid.

"Whenever I come to Mecca,I return only after a couple ofmonths. But seeing the mediatrial of mine, I was ready tocome for one-and-halfdays...But when I heard hotelsare not welcoming, I thought oftaking it on Skype. Why shouldI change my plans because ofmedia trial," he added.

Naik also maintained that nogovernment agency has so farapproached him to join investi-gation in connection withcharges levelled against. "I amwilling to co-operate with anyprobe agency if they approachme," he said.(PTI)
