Theyear2015hasbroughtmanychallenges forEuropeandRussia.Thenewsagendathisfallwasdominatedbytherefugeecrisis,theParisterrorattacks,andthe increasingmilitary involvementofRussiaandEurope inSyria. The conflict in Ukraine remains unresolved. Russia slid into arecession,andtheEurozonecrisismadeareturntomediaheadlineswhenanother Greek bailout was negotiated. Transatlantic trade negotiationsappearstalled,buthavebecomeevermorepoliticizedontheEUside.

EURUSremainsattheforefrontofacademicteachingandresearchaboutthesechallenges.Letmejustmentionafewhighlights.Ontheteachingside,welaunchedthisfalltheSpecialization“EuropeandRussiaintheWorld”withinCarleton’snewBachelorofGlobalandInternationalStudies(BGInS).In September, thirteen first‐year students enrolled in this brand‐newspecialization; togetherwith fourstudents in theBA, theyconstitute thelargest ever undergraduate cohort in the history of EURUS. We alsoadmittedanotherstrongandintellectuallyvibrantclassofMAstudents.

On theresearchside,EURUS facultymemberscan lookbackonahighlysuccessfulyear.Onemeasureofthisisthenumberofresearchgrantsandprizes awarded to EURUS professors: Crina Viju won a SSHRC InsightDevelopmentGrantinthe2014competitionandMartinGeigerinthe2015competition; both were announced this year. Achim Hurrelmann wasawardeda JeanMonnetChair. JoanDeBardelebenreceivedsupport fromtheGermanAcademicExchangeServiceforanupcomingresearchstayattheGermanInstituteforInternationalandSecurityAffairs.JamesCasteelwas a recipientof aResearchBursary from theFacultyofPublicAffairs(FPA).PiotrDutkiewiczwashonouredatasymposiumforwinningtheFPAResearchExcellenceAward.JeffSahadeowasoneoftherecipientsoftheBuildingConnectionsAwardbyCarleton’sVPResearchandInternational.

In January 2015, Krysia Kotarba joined EURUS as InstituteAdministrator.ForEURUSstaffandstudents,itfeelslikeKrysiahasbeenapartoftheEURUScommunityformuchlonger.Wearesothrilledandfortunatetohaveherhere.Lookingback,Krysiatellusthatshehasalsoenjoyed her time with EURUS during her first year. MikhailZherebtsovjoinsEURUSasapostdoctoralfellow 

MikhailZherebtsovjoinedEURUSinSeptember2015asapostdoctoralfellow.MikhailcompletedhisPhDinPoliticalScienceatCarletonin2014;hisresearchinterests are focused around contemporary issues of governance and publicpolicy in Russia and post‐Soviet states, with a current emphasis on thedevelopment of ‘e‐government’ in Russia. He has previously published onVladimirPutin’sconceptionoftheruleoflaw,andhasco‐authoredseveralarticleswithEURUSprofessorJoanDeBardelebenontopicssuchastheimpactofregional

electionsinRussia.ThepostdoctoralfellowshipheldbyMikhailissupportedbyagenerousdonationfromthePushkinFund.

Thisyear,EURUSwasjoinedbyfourlong‐termvisitingscholars:Dr.EmmanuelSigalas(InstituteforAdvanced Studies, Vienna),Dr.FrancisMcGowan (University of Sussex, Brighton),Dr.AgnieszkaWeinar (European University Institute in Florence), and Dr. MarkWolfgram (Oklahoma StateUniversity, Stillwater). Visiting scholars greatly enrich the academic discussion here at EURUS bysharinginsightsandresearchfromtheirareasofexpertise.TogethertheybringexpertisetoCarletoninavarietyofdomainsincludingparliamentarismintheEU,Europeanenergypolicy,Europeanizationofmigrationpolicies,aswellascollectivememoryandthelegacyofviolentconflictsandgenocide.Dr.SigalasvisitedEURUSintheWinterterm;hetaughtEURR4003/5003(SocialandPoliticalPerspectivesinEurope)andvariouspublictalksontheEurozonecrisisanditsimpactinparliaments,notleastinGreece,Dr.WeinarpresentedalectureinNovemberontheinfluencesthatshapetheEU’smigrationpolicytowardsitsneighbours,andDr.McGowandiscussedEurope’svariedpoliticalresponsestothepotentialexploitationofunconventionalgasresourcessuchasshalegas.Dr.Wolfgramhascontinuedtoworkonhisbookmanuscript,TheSinsoftheFathers:TheLongLegacyofWarandGenocideinFiveCountries,whichseekstoexplainvarietyinthewillingnessofnationstoaddressviolentconflicts.

EURUSprofessorsMartinGeigerandCrinaVijureceiveInsightDevelopmentGrantsfromSSHRC(2014‐2015)

EURUSispleasedtoannouncethatprofessorMartinGeigerhasreceivedaSSHRCInsightDevelopmentGrant in the 2015 competition. Awarded annually by the Social Sciences andHumanities ResearchCouncil(SSHRC),InsightDevelopmentGrantsareawardedbasedontheimportance,originalityandfeasibilityoftheapplicant’sproject,aswellastheapplicant’sexpertiseandpotentialtomakefuturecontributions. Within his proposed project, “The International Organization for Migration (IOM):Legitimacy, Influence, and Capacity through the Successful Management of External Relations”,professorGeigerwillanalyzeIOM’sgrowingimportanceformigrationpoliticsandwhatthismeansforourunderstandingofinternationalorganizations,theoutsourcingofcentralpolicytasks,aswellastheeffectivenessandsocio‐politicalimplicationsofnewapproachestomigration.

InJune2014,ProfessorCrinaVijuwasalsoawardedanInsightDevelopmentGrant.Thisachievementcouldonlybeannouncedafterourlastnewsletterwaspublished,socongratulationsarestillverymuchin order! ProfessorViju’s project, “Are theCentral andEasternEuropeanCountriesWinners of theEuropeanUnion’sShiftinTradePolicy?”analyzestheeffectoftheEuropeanUnion’snewgenerationoffree trade agreements (FTAs) on Central and Eastern European members of the EU. This newgeneration of FTAs includes agreements with Canada, South Korea, India, and the Association ofSoutheastAsianNations(ASEAN).Theseagreementsworktowardstheeliminationoftariffandnon‐tarifftradebarriers,aswellascommitmentsonhumanrights,labour,andenvironmentalstandards.

EURUSDirectorAchimHurrelmannhasbeenawardedaJeanMonnetChairinthisyear’scompetition.TheEuropeanUniongivesthisprestigioustitletoprofessorsteachingprimarilyonEuropean integration; it comprises financial support forcourse development, esearch and outreach activities.Professor Hurrelmann’s Jean Monnet Chair focuses on thetopicof“DemocracyintheEuropeanUnion”.TheChairwillhelpsupportnewEURUScoursesbothattheundergraduateandgraduate levels, includingournewfirst‐yearcourse forundergraduates (EURR 1001), and a new MA‐level coursesequence on democracy in the EU. It will also organizeacademicworkshops, lectures, and expert briefing sessionsontopicsrelevanttoEUgovernance. TheChairawardedto

In late November, the first lecture of the Chair was given by Dr. Sebastian Baglioni (University ofToronto),whodiscussedtheupcomingSpanishelection.OnThursday,January28,2016,theChairwill be officially launched with a special guest lecture from Professor Vivien Schmidt (BostonUniversity). EURUSprofessorsreceivetheBuildingConnectionsAward

ThisOctober, thesteeringcommitteeof theMigrationandDiasporaStudies (MDS) Initiative,whichincludes EURUS professors Martin Geiger and Jeff Sahadeo, was awarded one of four CarletonUniversityResearchPrizes,theBuildingConnectionsAward.Thisprizeisofferedtoanindividualorateamthathasmadeanexceptionalcontributionincreatingrelationshipswithanotableandsustainedimpactacrossresearchprograms.Sinceitsinceptionin2010,theMDSInitiativehasturnedCarletonintoanationallyandinternationallyrecognizedleaderinresearchandteachingonhumanmobilityandmigration,examiningitssocial,cultural,political,andeconomicimplicationsfromaninterdisciplinaryperspective.Inthepasttwoyearsalone,MDShasenabledanumberofresearcheventsrelevanttothemandateofEURUS,includingapolicyworkshopon“TheEuropeanUnion’sResponsestoNewMigrationandRefugeeIssues”(January2014),aconferenceon“Post‐SovietDiasporas”(March2014),apolicyworkshopon“NewTechnologiesintheTransformationofRefugeeandMigrationPoliciesinEuropeandNorthAmerica”(May2014),andalectureserieson“MobilityandPolitics”(ongoingsinceMarch2015). InSeptember2015,MDShostedaworkshopon“Powerand Influence in theGlobalRefugeeRegime,”whereanumberofscholarsandpolicy‐makerswereinvitedtodiscusspracticalstrategiesforaddressingtherefugeecrisis.AccordingtoProfessorSahadeo,connectingadvocacyonmigrationanddiasporaissueswithresearchwasoneofthedrivinginspirationsoftheMDSInitiative.

UpdatesonEURUSFacultyMembers

JamesCasteelwasgrantedtenureeffectiveJuly1,2015andiscurrentlyonsabbaticalleaveforthe2015‐2016academicyear.ProfessorCasteelrecentlycompletedanewbook:BetweenEmpireandUtopia:RussiaintheGermanGlobalImaginary,1905‐1941,which is forthcoming in the spring of 2016 from theUniversityofPittsburghPress.ThebookwillbeincludedinthePittSeriesofRussian and East European Studies. Carleton’s Faculty of Public Affairsgenerouslyawardedhimaresearchbursarytoassistinthebook’spublication.

JoanDeBardelebenisonsabbaticalleavefromJuly2015throughJune2016;duringthistimeshecontinuesherresearchonEU‐RussianrelationsaswellasRussianregionalelections.SheconductedinterviewsinBrusselsinMay,andinMoscowinSeptember.BeginninginJanuary2016,ProfessorDeBardelebenplanstospendthreemonthsinBerlin,workingonherproject“TheEUandtheUkraineCrisis:CausesandImpacts”,withsupportfromtheGermanAcademicExchangeService(DAAD).

Piotr Dutkiewicz has been characteristically busy over the past year. Hepublishedanumberofworks including thebookEurasian Integration–TheView fromWithin (co‐edited with Richard Sakwa), and aMini eBook calledUnlimited Potential: A Conversation with Muhammad Yunus. ProfessorDutkiewicz also published a paper titled “Beyond Traditional Approach toHigher Education,” based on a presentation hemade at a conference titled“InternationalizationofModernUniversities”inMoscow.

Professor Dutkiewicz participated in many other international conferences, including the 15thInternationalLikhachovScientificConference in St.Petersburg, andTheEuropeanConsortium forPoliticalResearch(ECPR)conferenceinMontreal,wherehepresentedajointpaperwithVinceDellaSalatitled,“PoliticswithoutaCentre:PoliticalChangeandStabilityinRussiaandItaly”.Moreover,heservedas amemberof thepanel for theRhodesForum, a consultativenetworkof academics andrepresentativesofNGOsandpublicsinstitutions.HealsoperformedasamemberofthepanelfortheAbuDhabiStrategicDebateonRegionalPowerCourtedandRegionalPowersCountered,aneventhosted by the Emirates Policy Center (EPC). The EPC addresses issues such as geopolitical shifts,terrorism,andregionalsecurity. Notably,ProfessorDutkiewiczparticipatedindebatesduringtheprestigiousValdaiClubdiscussion forum inOctober.AtMoscowStateUniversity,hegaveapubliclecture on “Democracy’s Unlikely Supporters”, and a public seminar titled, “Tectonic Shifts? TheProspectsofaSino‐RussianEntente.”

MartinGeigeriscontinuingandexpandinghisPhDandpost‐doctoralworkonborderandmigrationmanagement.In2015,hereceivedanewresearchgrantthat will allow him to conduct novel empirical research. He also providedseveralkeynotelecturestointernationalandnationalevents,includingawell‐attendedworkshoponthehistoryofinternationalorganizationsinmigrationpoliticsinAthens.

ProfessorGeigeristhefoundingeditorofanewthematicserieswithPalgraveMacmillan,onmigrationpolitics(‘Mobility&Politics’) thathasseenthepublicationof its first fivevolumes in 2014‐2015. Over the lastmonths, several publicationswere prepared and submitted,including his chapter for an upcoming book (edited by Ruben Zaiotti) on migration and bordermanagement, a reprint of a very successful co‐edited special issuewith the Journal ofEthnicandMigration Studies (‘International Organizations and the Politics of Migration’, co‐editor: AntoinePécoud),andachapteron‘smartborders’forananthology(forthcomingin2016)on‘MigrationandSocial Transformation in Europe’ with Springer (edited by Anna Amelina and Kenneth Horvath).ProfessorGeigeralsoorganizedaspeakerserieson‘Mobility&Politics’atCarleton.Furthermore,hecreatedanewfaculty‐studentresearchclusterbringingtogetherlocalundergraduate,graduateandpost‐graduatestudentswithpractitioners,formerstudentsandinternationalvisitors.

AchimHurrelmanncontinues to serveasDirectorofEURUSandAssociateDirectoroftheCentreforEuropeanStudies.Inthe2015,hewasawardedtheJean Monnet Chair “Democracy in the European Union”. The Chair will besupported by an EU grant of €50,000 between 2015 and 2018. ProfessorHurrelmann’scurrentresearchfocusesonthepoliticizationandlegitimationofEuropeanintegration,aswellasdemocracyintheEU.Hepublishedtwopeer‐reviewedjournalarticlesin2015:“ThePoliticizationofEuropeanIntegration:

ProfessorHurrelmannpresentedapaperattheEuropeanConsortiumofPoliticalResearch(ECPR)JointSessionsofWorkshopsinWarsawinMarch2015.HealsoremainsbusywithhisSSHRC‐fundedresearchprojecton“TheEurozoneFinancialCrisisandthePoliticizationofEuropeanIntegration”.With Emmanuel Brunet‐Jailly and Amy Verdun (both University of Victoria), he is co‐editing atextbook titled European Union Governance and Policy‐Making: A Canadian Perspective, aimedexplicitlyatundergraduatestudentsinCanada.

JeffSahadeopursuedseveralwide‐rangingprojects,includingthepublishingof “Home andAway:Why theAsianPeripheryMatters in SovietHistory” inKritika:Explorations inRussianandEurasianHistory.Additionally,ProfessorSahadeo worked as a research partner for the Global Centre for Pluralism(GCP),writing“HistoryandMemory:ImplicationsforPluralisminKyrgyzstanand the Ferghana Valley,” available on the Centre’s website. He alsoaccompaniedaGCPdelegationtoKyrgyzstaninJune2015,whereheappeared

ataconferenceheldbytheOrganizationforSecurityandCo‐operationinEurope(OSCE),andengagedwith governmentministries andnon‐governmental organizations in efforts tobuild tolerance andrespectfordiversityinthecountry.Intermsofpublicappearances,ProfessorSahadeowasinvitedtopresentattheCanadianInternationalCouncilandtheTurkicCanadianConvention.HeadditionallygaveinvitedlecturesonhisSovietmigrationprojectatDalhousieUniversityandYaleUniversity,andappearedonCBC’stheNationalandPowerandPoliticsonthesubjectoftheUkraineconflict.

HesupervisedonePhDandfourMAstudentstocompletionandhasbeendevelopinganewEURUScoursewithProfessorHurrelmannfortheBachelorofGlobalandInternationalStudies,anewdegreeprogramhehelpeddesign.ProfessorSahadeoalsowonthe2015“BuildingConnections”ResearchAward,offeredbyCarletonUniversityforhisroleinMigrationandDiasporaStudiesinitiative.

CrinaVijuwasawardedin2014aSSHRCInsightDevelopmentGrantfortheprojecttitled,“AretheCentralandEasternEuropeancountrieswinnersoftheEuropeanUnionshiftintradepolicy?”Hercurrentresearchprimarilyfocusesonthistopic.ProfessorVijualsopublishedapeer‐reviewedarticle,“FreeRidingasaBusinessStrategyduringAntidumpingActions”(withW.A.Kerr) intheJournalofInternationalBusinessResearch.

As an invited speaker, professor Viju gave a presentation on EU‐RussianrelationsataJeanMonnetworkshopinSt.Petersburg.Shealsopresentedapaperonthe“EU’sNewGenerationofFreeTradeAgreements: IsEverythingon theTable?” at the49thAnnualConferenceorganizedby theCanadianEconomicsAssociation(RyersonUniversity). InFebruarysheheadedawebinarorganizedbytheCentreforEuropeanStudies(CES)onCanada‐EUComprehensiveTradeandEconomic Agreement at Carleton University. She also co‐organized the international workshop:StrategicPartnershipasanInstrumentofEUForeignPolicy,heldatCarletonUniversityinApril,alongwithProfessorsJoanDeBardelebenandDavidLong.

Currently,ProfessorVijuisworkingontwoarticles:“TPPandGMORegulatorySystems:AnyHopeforSuccessfulNegotiations?”and“IsIndiaorCanada/USaThreatfortheCEECs?MainBarrierstoTrade.”ShealsocontinuestoteachtheMAcoreseminaraswellasanMAcourseoninternationalpoliticaleconomy. During the winter 2016 semester, Professor Viju will be teaching the “Economics ofTransition”and“EuropeandRussiaintheWorld”attheundergraduatelevel.

EURUSoffersspecializationinCarleton’snewBachelorofGlobalandInternationalStudies

This fallmarkedthedebutof theBachelorofGlobalandInternationalStudies(BGInS)program,whichincludestheSpecialization‘EuropeandRussiaintheWorld’offeredbyEURUS.

KaterynaGazaryan,afirstyearBGInSstudent,specializingin‘EuropeandRussiaintheWorld’,spokewithusaboutherinterestsinEuropeanandRussianstudiesandherfirstimpressionsoftheprogram.Katerynabecameinterestedin the EURUS specialization due to her fascinationwithEuropean culture and desire to connect her Ukrainian

background with her education. So far, Kateryna’s favorite feature of the program is themultidisciplinaryscopeofthespecialization,whichcoversthehistory,culture,politics,andeconomicsof Europe and Russia. Having enjoyed studying under the guidance of EURUS professors Achim

HurrelmannandJeffSahadeo,shealsocitestheemphasisoncriticalthinkingasadesirableaspectoftheprogram.

Kateryna is particularly interested in learning about current problems inEU‐Russia relations, andhopes toapply theknowledgesheobtains through theBGInSprogramtoa career in internationalaffairs.Despiteanalreadyimpressivegraspofthreelanguages(English,Russian,andUkrainian),sheis nonetheless looking to diversify her knowledge further by taking advantage of the program’slanguagerequirement.Bythetimeshegraduates,KaterynaaimstomasterSpanishaswell.

FormerCanadianAmbassadorChristopherWestdaldiscussesthenatureCanadian‐Russianrelations

This September, EURUS and the Centre for Governance and PublicManagement (CGPM), hosted aspecial guest lectureonCanadian‐Russian relationswith formerCanadianAmbassadorChristopherWestdal. Ambassador Westdal served as the Canadian Ambassador to Russia from 2003 to 2006.Duringhistalk,hesharedhis impressionsofthecurrentstateofCanadian‐Russianrelations,withacritical emphasis on the nature of Canadian foreign policy under the leadership of former PrimeMinisterStephenHarper.AmbassadorWestdalarguedthatinrecentyears,Canada’simagehasbeennegatively impacted in theeyesofbilateral andmultilateralpartners, relationswithRussiabeingaprimeexample.Theroomwasfilledtocapacity,andconcludedwithaspiritedQ&AsessionfocusedonCanadianforeignpolicyinthecontextofthethenup‐comingfederalelectionsinOctober.

EURUSco‐hostsconferenceon“TheGeopoliticsofEnergyintheCaspianRegion”

InApril2015,EURUSco‐hostedaconferenceon“TheGeopoliticsofEnergyintheCaspianRegion“withtheEmbassiesofAzerbaijan,GeorgiaandTurkeyinOttawa.Theconferencewasheldontheoccasionofthetwentiethanniversaryoftheconclusionoftheso‐called“ContractoftheCentury”in1994,whichinitiatedtheexploitationofhydrocarbonresourcesintheCaspianSea.ItexaminedthedevelopmentoftheenergysectorinAzerbaijan,oilandgascontractssignedwithmultinationalcorporations,andthetrilateralcooperationwithGeorgiaandTurkeyonmajoroilandgasprojects,whichmadetheseregionaldevelopments possible. It also discussed the impact of the recent decline in oil prices on energyproductionintheCaspianregion.AcademicpresentersincludedEURUSprofessorJeffSahadeo,EURUSAdjunctProfessorRobertCutler,ProfessorChristophZürcher(UniversityofOttawa),Dr.AfganNiftiyev(CaspianStrategyInstitute,Istanbul)andMr.AlexVatanka(MiddleEastInstitute,WashingtonDC).Theconferencealso featuredapanelofpractitioners, including theHEMr. SelcukUnal (AmbassadorofTurkeytoCanada),Dr.RehaAykulMuratoğlu(MinistryofEnergyandNaturalResources,RepublicofTurkey),HEMr.AlexanderLatsabidze(AmbassadorofGeorgiatoCanada),andHEMr.RamilHuseynli(Charged’AffairesofAzerbaijantoCanada).

EURUSco‐hostsaroundtablediscussionontheEU’srelationswitheasternpartners

In October, EURUS, the Center for EuropeanStudies, and the Friedrich Ebert StiftungFoundation (Washington Office), hosted aroundtablediscussiontitled, “TheEUandtheEast in 2030: Four Scenarios of Relationsbetween theEU, theRussian Federation, andthe Common Neighbourhood”. Specialistsfrom Germany, France, Russia, and Polandexploredfourpossiblescenariosregardingthefuture of EU‐Russia relations in theCommonNeighbourhood, which covered a widespectrum of outcomes and implications foreach actor. One scenario proposed an initialstagnationofrelations,followedbyareturntoamorepragmaticapproachwheretheEuropeanUnionandRussia focuson shared interests and ignoredpoints of diplomatic tension.The eventwaswellattendedbystudents,academics,andcivilservants,andledtoananimateddiscussiononthecurrentstateofEU‐Russiarelations,androleofUkraineasanindependentactorduringtheQ&A.

“Kazakhstan:AYoungCountrywithanAncientHistory”

OnOctober13,2015,EURUShostedaroundtablediscussion, “Kazakhstan –AYoungCountrywithanAncientHistory”.Thiseventwasco‐sponsoredbytheEmbassyoftheRepublicofKazakhstan,andthe Centre for Governance and PublicManagement (CGPM), and marked the 550thanniversarysincetheestablishmentoftheKazakhKhanate. The conference was opened by HisExcellency,KonstantinZhigalov, theAmbassadorof the Republic of Kazakhstan to Canada, whodescribed some of Kazakhstan’s history andachievements since the nation has achievedindependencefromtheSovietUnion,in1991.

Topics of panel discussion included the cultural roots of Kazakhstan, such as unique folklore andinfluentialstylesofmusic,aswellastheevolutionofKazakhKhanshipunderRussianimperialrule.Kazakhstan’shistorywasdiscussedbyexpertsincludingDr.AlmaKunanbaeva(Stanford,PaloAlto)

“Mobility&Politics:EmergingTrendsandCommonChallengesinEuropeandCanada”

Throughouttheterm,theMobility&Politicslectureseriesexploredavarietyofinterestingandtimelysubjects including: re‐theorizing skilled migration, German responses to Europe’s migration andrefugeechallenge,aswellas theevolutionof theconceptofa ‘sanctuarycity’asa response to therefugeecrisisinCanada,theUnitedStatesandEurope.

Theserieswasverywellattendedandprovidedstudentswithanopportunitytohearinternationaland local perspectives on key issues in mobility politics. Guest speakers included internationalscholars Kenneth Horvath (Karlsruhe, Germany), Sabine Dini (Paris XIII, France), and ParvatiRaghuram (Newcastle‐upon‐Tyne, United Kingdom). EURUS professors Achim Hurrelmann andMartinGeigeralsoparticipatedintheseries.

EURUSMAstudentBojanDodikhadtheopportunity towork forNational Program Evaluation Services (NPES), a branch of theRCMP.ServingasaJuniorEvaluationAnalyst,hisworkconsistedofevaluating law enforcement programs. When asked what heenjoyedthemostabouthiswork,Bojanrepliedthefollowing:

“WithoutadoubtwhatI’veenjoyedmostaboutworkingforNPEShasbeenthelevelofresponsibilityandrespectgiventostudents.Ifyouarereadytoshowinitiativeandtolearn,youarerewardedwithmeaningfulworkthateventuallymakesitswaytotheeyesofsenior

managementwithintheRCMP[…].In8monthsasaco‐opstudent,Ilearnedhowtoapplytheskillswespendyearsdevelopinginacademia.Acapacityforresearch,analysis,writing,andcommunicatingisvaluabletoemployers.”

BojanalsonotedthathisstudiesinEURUShadanoticeableimpactonhis job.HisresearchontheBalkansresultedinhimbeingintroducedtoaspecificevaluationprogramatwork.Overall,hehighlyrecommendstheco‐opprogramtoallstudents.“Theexperienceyoustandtogain,bothprofessionally

CatherineMalezisfeaturedinFPAVoices

During the past summer, EURUS MA student CatherineMalezishastravelledtoKyrgyzstaninordertoconductfieldresearch, focusingonexchangesbetweenlocalKyrgyzandUzbeks,inthecontextofopen‐airmarkets(bazaars).Inhermajorresearchpaper,whichfocusesoncross‐bordertradebetween Kyrgyz and Uzbek people, Catherine wishes toexplore how interaction between the two groups haschanged given recent tensions between them throughouttheFerghanaValley.

With theguidanceof a localKyrgyz student,Catherinevisited severalbazaars,where shehad theopportunitytodiscusstheseissueswithsellers.ThroughEURUS,sheachievedhergoalofconductingher own field research. Catherine’s experience has been featured in the November edition of theFacultyofPublicAffair’sonlinenewsletter,FPAVoices,whichisavailablehere.
