Dear Readers,
You might know that the board of
foundation “Water is our World” is changing
their focus: less shipping of materials and
more exporting of knowledge and
experience. Our on-going searching for
new partners found Guyana Water Ltd
(GWI), the drinking water and waste water
companyfor the whole of Guyana. This
neighboring country of Suriname has a lot
of work to do in improvements of the
drinking water provisions of Guyana, in
bothquantityandquality. You can read
further in this newsletter, which also brings
other news items of the past half year.

Guyana 1: Multiannual cooperation with Guyana Water Ltd. (GWI) signed
November
On November 10th in Georgetown the MoU (memorandum of understanding) was signed between
GWI and the foundation. In the MoU both parties stated their mutual intentions as well as the
conditions at which these will be formed. This concerns a multiannual cooperation at which knowledge
and experience of the foundation is applied to help GWI.
Richard Van West Charles (CEO of GWI) and Casper van Ommen signing the MoU
GWI foresees more than 150.000 connections to drinking water in the whole country. This
concerns also the main city of Georgetown as well as the smaller cities. Furthermore it provides
to deliver drinking water to approx. 80% of the settlements of the “native Indians” in the interior of
Guyana.
The most important motivation of GWI is
the reduction of the ever present poverty
by ongoing improvement of drinking water
and waste water facilities.
GWI has approx. 500 employees who
deliver many Mm3/year drinking water from
approx. 25 production locations. There the
NRW (Non-Revenue Water or spilled
water) is very high, 50-70%. Access to
Purified water is only possible for 50% of
the population. Also there are many quality
problems in relation to the delivered
drinking water. Furthermore GWI is
responsible for the waste water system in
the main capital Georgetown including the
24 waste water pump units.

Guyana 2: The Preparation
Augustus- September
Still there is contact between Casper and Roy Codette of SWM since his first mission to Suriname
(1994) during which he cooperated with Roy. Later Roy went to Guyana to work for the Guyanese
water company.
Last year, during is ½ year stay in Suriname, Casper provided for a training in Guyana for training
ground water treatment in filter vessels. Here this kind of process was unknown. This visit resulted into
a request for assistance to the water company of Guyana by the foundation.
Augustus in Guyana: Visit to the minister
as finale of the mission.
In August Casper again visited GWI, together
with a group employees of SWM for the
IDB(Investment Development Bank). The
target of IDB is stimulating of knowledge
exchange between both water companies
SWM and GWI. The foundation can fit very
well in this cooperation.
As follow up of this visit of Casper to Guyana
Mr. Van West Charles (CEO) and Mr.Sheko
(Director Operations) wanted to know better
the people of the foundation. Furthermore they
wanted to learn from the Dutch drinking water
supply. A short visit was arranged on the way
back from a congress in Sweden. The visit
took place from September 5th to 8
th.
The visits to the production facilities and the
good information exchange accomplished
enough trust to propose further cooperation.
The cooperation will focus onto transfer of
knowledge and the delivery of materials from
the foundation to GWI During the visit the next
mentioned points of interest for GWI were
developed, also the details for a MoU were
discussed. The relationship between GWI and
the Dutch drilling company De Ruiter was
enhanced. September in Zwolle: Richard Van West Charles
(CEO of GWI), his wife Roxane and Dwayne
Shako (Director Operations)

For GWI the most important points of interest on short term are:
1. Improve the water quality by investing in new ground water treatments and the creation of a
department for quality assurance (including laboratory).
2. Drilling of better functioning pump wells, including training of the supervisor
3. Replacement of the existing billing system
4. NRW in all its technical and organizational facets
Guyana 3: The 1eexecution: a training in Guyana and a mission of 5 employees of GWI to The
Netherlands and 2 containers send on transport
November –December
Guyana 3.1: training GWI in Guyana
The much required and urgent need of GWI to knowledge in water and water treatment resulted in a
quick follow up after the visit in The Netherlands in the form of a training in Guyana. So Casper and
Jacques traveled to Guyana November 5th, to present a 5-daycoursein water quality and water
treatment. They traveled 2 days via Paramaribo in a 10-persons Czesna to Georgetown Guyana. At
the water company they met 25 young, well-educated and enthusiastic men who wanted to follow the
course.
It was a pleasure to be
allowed to lecture such a
group. For a varied program
parts of the day were used for
specific targets for water
treatment and design of water
treatments. Small groups
were formed for consultation
and discussion to form a
product which then was to be
presented. Specifically the
combination of knowledge
transfer and practical
exercises in groups was very
much appreciated.
Casper and Jacques enjoyed the effort and
interest of the participants. After this week
they are looking anxiously forward to a next
cooperation.
After the course all
participants received
a certificate from
Jacques

Guyana 3.2: training of 5 employees of GWI in NL
On Sunday morning November 27th Jacques was waiting with a suitcase filled with warm clothing. 5
Guyanese, four men and one woman, working for GWI, the drinking and waste water company of
Guyana came to The Netherlands for an intensive 5 days training. The weather forecast showed
much cold wheather, below the freezing point. Compared to their own average 32 degrees, even
never below 20 degrees Celsius, the visitors really appreciated the extra warm clothing. Theo and
Vera had organized this gesture.
The training was varied and tailor made to the wishes of the group. The first day was rather easy with
a short explanation of the program and a visit to the production unit Engelse Werk in Zwolle. They
were surprised by the cleanliness and organized looks, combined with technology and building design.
Which is totally different from their own experiences. This was cause for their focus for the rest of the
week.
Denise and Aggrey followed a training for drilling,
rehabilitation and maintenance of pump wells,
one day at the company De Ruiter and two days
at Q-flow, the final day again at the foundation
under the leadership of Ruud Krab
Denise en Aggrey on visit at a drilling location of
company De Ruiter in Amsterdam
Jailal, Riaz and Avinash were most interested in
water quality and water treatment. For them visits
were organized to some departments of Vitens. They
were informed about water analyses, water
distribution, billing and data processing. Two days
were fully spent in water treatment and set up of a
program with requirements to design a drinking water
company.
As souvenir all 5 trainees received a pair of traditional
Dutch wooden shoes, this is Jailal

End of the week: visit to Rook
At the end of the training the week was finalized in style with a typical buffet of stew and kale with
smoked sausage after several ice skating rounds at the ice rink at the Maagjesbolwerk in Zwolle.
After a visit to Amsterdam on Saturday, the group traveled back on Sunday via Suriname to Guyana.
From the many positive reactions of participants and the supervisors/teachers we may conclude that
the training was a great success.
With thanks to:

Change over revised watermeters.
Augustus
At the company Elster Water Meter the foundation collected 200 pieces calibrated water meters. It
concerns 50 pieces QN 10, 50 Pieces Qn 6 and 100 Pieces Qn 3,5.
The meters, free of charge revised by Presikhaaf are calibrated by Elster, part of Honywell. Elster is
one of the last companies in The Netherlands which can calibrate big water meters. Roland Kouwe
from Elster deployed himself to realise this. Elster promised that this service can be used more often.
Dhr. Roland Kouwe of Elster and Casper with the 200 water meters
On Monday evening November 28 all
volunteers were informed by the
board about the new developments.
Also Ramchand Jailal of GWI told us
more about his country and the
present developments of GWI. The
big conclusion of this evening is that
there is very much to be done.

Making available of 4 wheel chairs, of which one for a handicapped girl in Mozambique.
October
Via John Bunnink a request was received from Chimoioin Mozambique if it was possible to transport a
wheel chair in a materials container which was in preparation, this was intended for a 12 year old girl,.
RSR (make people mobile) location Nieuwleusen complied and even delivered 2 wheel chairs
(www.rsr.nl). Also the company Baanderij delivered 2 wheel chairs (www.debaanderij.nl)
In October the container to Mozambique was sent on transport. Apart of the 4 wheel chairs in this
container more additional materials were transported for Johan. Furthermore materials and equipment
for the chemists school in Beira for were part of the load, including an echo apparatus and other
specialistic material for the foundation SODA.
This is a beautiful example of being strong together!!
2 Days visit of SWM to the Foundation Water is our World. July
Reaction from Mozambique: The girl
crawled only within the house, the
whole day. Now she can go outside.
Two of the wheel chairs before being
packed into the container with

How is Johan Rook nowadays in Mozambique?
December
Email from Johan (little bit shortened) Work makes its progress, sometimes with its ups and downs. The poor road conditions also is cause of failures. We have been drilling water wells near Beira and even one well in the Gorongosa National Park, working between elephants, buffalo and other big animals. This was quite interesting. New well drilling requests keep coming. I hope that this will also lead into an increase of maintenance of the drills, but the people around here have not yet a proper idea what the implications are, especially in the private sector.
Pictures: drilling in Gorongosa National Park The plan for 2017 is to start a helping project in the second half of 2017. This will be a cooperation between Water is our World, Agua Mundo (John Bunnik) and Servicos de Agua-
It was an exciting visit where many thoughts
were exchanged.
As memorandum to the visit Alwin and
Anuschka received a water meter clock,
constructed by Henk Hogenkamp.

Rook. We will search in a circle of 100 km around Beira for a village where there is insufficient water. There we will drill a water well and then install the Plug & play solar water tower of the foundation. Next we want to repeat this concept around Chimoio, 200 km away from Beira. Chimoio was chosen because John Bunnik has his company there but also because I will move my company over to there. By now another container completely loaded with materials is on its way. We are looking forward to its arrival. For this we are very thankful to the Foundation and its volunteers, We wish the Foundation and all volunteers Merry Christmas and a superb New Year. And again thank you all for all help we did receive.
Kind Regards,
Servicos de Agua Rook.
Johan and Carmen.
Mission commission of the finalized water treatment system for the water company
Soctrangwaco in Vietnam.
September
For VEI Jacques and Casper checked and accepted the water treatment system of SocTrang.
In an earlier stadium Casper made quality improvement suggestions during a 2 days visit to the water
company of SocTrang. These suggestions resulted in changes and extensions of the present
installation. With materials from the former Vitens production unit Manderveen the water treatment
installation of Angh Hiep was converted. Truong Ngo performed this converting by order of the water
company Soctrangwaco. The present installation is extended with a pre-filter installation and an
aerations tower. De operation of the installation is fully automatic and can be controlled by a SCADA-
system. The quality of the water has much improved, now the metal Manganese will be removed from
the water completely.
