REMEMBRANCE DAY
Today our staff & students will take a minutes silence in recognition for
Remembrance Day. Our SRC members have been selling Poppies & Wrist
Bands to help raise money for the RSL - Returned Service Men & Women's
League.
NEW COLLEGE UNIFORM
With the introduction of the new College uniform in 2013 there was a two
year period of grace, during which time students could wear new, old or
combination of uniform items. We are now approaching the end of that two
year transition period and it is timely to remind all families that students are
expected to be wearing the new College uniform for the beginning of the
2015 school year.
Most of our students are wearing correct College uniform with pride and
look terrific – we thank parents for supporting our uniform policy. Teachers
and the Student Support teams provide constant reminders of our
expectation that all students will be in full and correct College uniform.
Students are required to get a uniform pass when they do not have correct
items of uniform and parents will be contacted when students are
persistently out of uniform. If your child does not have an item of uniform,
please provide a signed note of explanation - this will enable them to get a
uniform pass for the day.
Uniform can be purchased from Beleza store located at 107 Ryrie
Street – it is open from 9am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday.
MUSIC CONCERT
A reminder to all music students from Year 7 to 12 that the Music Concert
is this Wednesday evening. Students are to be at school by 6.40pm for a
7.30pm concert start.
Please ensure that you bring your family members and friends to the
concert. Please hand items for the raffle and raffle tickets to Mrs Stabryla by
tomorrow. There are still a large number of students who have not bought
something for the raffle or returned tickets.

Less than 3 weeks away! The following is a “final letter”/checklist for all families.
$$ - Payment for Bike Tour. Please make sure you have completed the payment for Bike Tour within the
next couple of weeks. Just a reminder that the total for 2014 is $220. (Bike hire is/was a separate amount to
this) Please don’t leave the final payments to the few days before we leave.
$$ - Family accounts – Also, a reminder that families must also have their family account up to date for
students to be able to go on tour.
Equipment – The equipment list is on the Bike Tour Facebook page. A hard copy of the equipment list is
available from the M11 staff room (please see Mr Unmack).
Training – The final weekend training ride is this weekend – Sunday, 16th November. I was a little out on the

a 9.00am departure. We have our last official training ride on Thursday, 27th November during school time.
This will be from morning recess to 3.15pm. Students will need to bring lunch for this ride – a support vehicle
will accompany us.
Final Letter - Please make sure your child accesses the “final letter”
running through the important last minute organisational details of the
tour. It will be distributed at a final Bike Tour Meeting early next week
and will also be posted on the Bike Tour Facebook page.
Not many sleeps now!
Regards –
Mr Glenn Unmack,
On behalf of the Bike Tour team.
YEAR 11 ARRANGEMENTS FOR END OF CLASSES 2014
Please note the final week of school for year 11 students is summarised as follows:
Year 11 Exams: Monday, 10th November up to and including Friday, 14th November.
There will be no Year 11 classes for this week.
Orientation Week: Monday, 17th November to Friday, 21st November.
Full school uniform must be worn while attending school during Exams and Orientation Week.
COMPULSORY ATTENDANCE
Students will have lessons over the week for each of their subjects chosen for next year. At this time,
organisational matters and requirements for the following year will be discussed.
More importantly students will commence 2015 subject work. This is to ensure that our Year 12
students are given the best possible opportunity to excel in 2015.
This work will not be repeated at the start of next year so it is critical that all students attend and
make the most out of this week.
Students will be given a copy of their program for the day. Any students who are absent can
collect their copy from Mr Wight or Ms Smith.
James Murphy
Senior Years Co-ordinator.
SCHOOL EXCURSIONS AND REMINDERS
Students who don’t attend an excursion are expected to attend school as normal. Parents
are asked to not keep students at home.
YEAR 9 DEAKIN UNIVERSITY CAMP
Next week, 17th – 18th November, our year 9 students who have selected to participate in the
Deakin residential camp will head off to Melbourne for two days and one night. They will
experience university life first hand, staying in the student residences and working with
students who are now studying at university. Our students will work with the Deakin film
students and learn the art of film making and directing.
The students have chosen their groups for activities and accommodation. They MUST collect an information package
from me or Mr McCurry, in the Language Centre. This will tell you what to pack and it is important that you follow
this list and not leave anything out – or add extras.
All meals are provided. However, there are no snacks included so it is advised that you bring a small bag of snacks
such as muesli bars, fruit and nuts. Please do not bring bottles of soft drink. There are coin operated machines
should you wish to purchase a drink while you are there. You may wish to bring some loose change for this – please
be aware that there will not be anywhere for you to change money.
Behaviour: as with all camps and excursions, we expect the best from our students and we expect them to
represent Newcomb Secondary College at the highest standard. We are generally not disappointed. Last year, our
students behaved exceptionally well and were a credit to themselves and the school, and we expect the same this
year. However, we have no capacity to look after students who choose to disregard the rules and expectations of us
and the university and in the unlikely event that this might occur, parents may be contacted to collect their child
from the camp at any time.
We look forward to a successful camp and the college would like to extend our thanks to Kerry Tucker and Belinda
Lees and the Deakin University staff and students for providing us with these excellent opportunities.
Please contact me or Mr McCurry if you have any questions.

REMEMBRANCE DAY
In Australia Remembrance Day is dedicated to
Australians who died as a result of war,
particularly from World War I onwards.
A minute of silence is dedicated to the deceased,
especially for soldiers who died fighting to protect
the nation.
Remembrance Day is annually observed on
November 11 although it is not a public holiday.
Red poppies are worn on blazers, shirts, jumpers
and other items of clothing on Remembrance Day
to remember those who died during a war.
Poppies were among the first plants that came
from the battlefields of northern France and
Belgium during World War I.
Some people believed
the popular myth that
poppies were rich in
their redness because
they blossomed from
grounds that were
saturated with soldiers’
blood.

PROVIDING A COMPUTER FOR YOUR STUDENTS
Educational studies have shown that students benefit greatly from having access
to their own computer device that they can use in classes at school when
needed as well as taking the device home to continue study and homework
tasks. Computers are not intended to replace a pen and paper but rather be
used as tool to give more opportunities to complete school work in different
ways. While it is hoped that all students will eventually have their own computer
we understand that this may not be possible for all families so we encourage you
to contact the school if you want more information.
We would like all students to be able to access their own computer device to
ensure they are able to take advantage of the many learning opportunities open to them in today's digital world. To keep
up with the latest technology and the best prices for our families we have negotiated a special package price for new
student computers.
We are happy to announce that three devices are now available for sale via our online JB Education portal.
Entry Level Laptop:
Lenovo 11e - this is a rugged student friendly model with a solid state memory and a slim design with great new
features.
Everyday Student Model:
Lenovo 11e Yoga - a touch screen model with a flip screen that becomes a tablet-like device.
High Performance:
Lenovo 10" Tablet - Great portability and fast processor speed in a highly portable tablet.
All of these devices will come with the eduStar software image which includes over 48 educational software titles.
These models are being made available specially through JB education and will not be available in shops.
The specially priced packages include a 3 year Warranty, a carry bag and have extra options available to suit your
needs.
Different payment options are also available.

Other Options for Providing a Computer for Your Students
There are three options open to our students in 2015 –
1. Purchase a new Lenovo device through our JB Education Portal. Once fully paid for there is no more to pay and
you own the device outright. All computers come with the eduStar software package of over 48 titles
including Microsoft Office and virus protection, a three year warranty and bag.
2. Bring your own device. (BYOD) If you already have a notebook/netbook computer or tablet that is not more
than three years old you can bring it in to check that it will be suitable to use at school. After discussion with our IT
support staff it may be possible to network the computer to access school drives and Internet. Some software may also
be available for student use depending on the device.
3. Use school supplied notebooks in classroom trolleys or desktop computers in classrooms. These computers will
be limited to classroom use and will not be available to take home. School supplied computers may not be available in
classrooms your student is in and may not be available if booked by another class.
