What is Tithing?

What does tithe mean?

Tithe = tenth or 10%

They gave 10% for the Levites every year

 They gave 10% for the

religious festivals every year 

They gave 10% for the needy every three years (3.3%

per year)

TOTAL = 23.3%

Is tithing talked about in the New Testament?

Are we held to the Old Testament law?

Nowhere in the New Testament are we

commanded to tithe

What is the Purpose of Giving in the New

Testament?

1. To meet the needs of the other believers

(Acts 2:44-45; 1 John

3:17, Galatians 6:9-10)

2. To meet the needs of Christian workers

(1 Timothy 5:17-18; 1 Corinthians 9:6-14; Philippians 4:15-18)

3. To meet the needs of the poor

(Luke 12:33-34;

Ephesians 4:28; James 1:27)

How Should we Give?

1. We should give without trying to impress

(Matthew 6:1-4)

2. We should give voluntarily

(2 Corinthians 8:3-4)

3. We should give expectantly

4. We should give cheerfully

5. We should give sacrificially
