New Radon Mitigation Technologies
4th Annual BC Radon Workshop Four Points Hotel, Kamloops November 23, 2015
New Policies and Building Codes
• Building design can inhibit or allow radon entry.
• National, provincial, and municipal building codes are being strengthened to prevent radon.
• International Green Building Councils (CaGBC & USGBC) now recognize radon as a major
obstacle to indoor air quality. (Leedv4 credits)
BC Building Code 2015
• Updates to the 2012 BC Building Code include extending the radon vent pipe to the exterior of a dwelling at time of construction.
• The passive radon vent piping system for new construction, focusing on sub slab depressurization as applied to Area 1 - the strongest protective measures in Canada.
Mitigation Technologies: Radon Guard™
• Radon Guard™ - high performance structural under-slab ventilation and insulation panel
system. Provides efficient soil gas removal, insulation, capillary break and known compressive strength. Easy to install, cost effective solution to replace the prescriptive gravel.
• CCMC has certified Radon Guard™ to be National Building Code 2010 compliant as a
replacement/alternative for the code prescriptive gravel solution.
Mitigation Technologies: Radon Block™
• High performance, extremely durable sub slab barrier membrane, specifically designed/
engineered to block radon and methane gas from migrating through the concrete slab.
• Radon Block™ has been independently evaluated by the NRC and determined to have a
substantially lower permeance to radon than a 6mm or 20mm poly membrane. Radon Block™ is
CCMC certified to be a compliant replacement/alternative to the code prescriptive solution.
Mitigation Technologies: Radostat™
• Reducing indoor radon is commonly done in North America by a system called sub-slab
depressurization, which is either an active or passive system to exhaust soil gas outside the building.
• A less invasive method is now available with the Radostat™ that effectively dilutes radon
concentrations by piloting a building’s existing ventilation system.
Kamloops Water Wells
• Four systems provide drinking water to residents of Kamloops. The South Thompson River is
the source for the Main Water Utility, which supplies over 95% of the community’s need. The North Thompson River and wells serve the remaining city population.
• It is vital to identify contaminants like radon for water intake systems.
Mitigation Technologies: Airwell
• The Airwell is a new technology that solves the problem of radon in well water before water
enters the home.
• Air access is restored to the water enabling the ventilation of gases, such as radon and
methane, to the atmosphere. The system quickly and reliably removes contaminants.
Mitigation Technologies: Airwell Science
• The Airwell system improves water quality by injecting air into the water source through an
aeration pipe.
• Pressurized air pumped to the bottom of the well lifts contaminated water to the surface
where contaminants release.
• Water is recirculated, oxidized, and purified.
Measurement Instruments
Measurement devices include alpha track monitors, digital monitors, continuous radon monitors and
true radon detectors, which are analogous to carbon monoxide detectors.
Devices likes the Radtrak alpha track monitor is economical and accurate, used by both homeowners
and professionals. The Pylon AB6A is a specialized, highly sensitive instrument for professionals.
Measurement Instruments: AB6A
• Short term testing approved by the EPA and Health Canada is possible with the Pylon AB6A
Continuous radon monitor.
• Scientific Laboratory grade, portable radiation monitor for fast, accurate measurements of alpha
particles using Lucas scintillation cells.
• May be used for grab sampling and for continuous radon monitoring.
Measurement Instruments: Inspect
• Monitors are achieving better design where it matters.
• The Corentium Inspectuses alpha spectrometry to more precisely calculate radon levels
• The Inspect offers high yield storage, simple computer data transfer, and customizable reporting
software.
