REPORT

The planned site for the extension of the Reina Sofía Museum, located at the rear of this Madrid Art Gallery, inspired a solution in which its marginal position in relation to the Atocha roundabout is compensated by a type of architecture that leaves no doubt as to the activity of the institution. The imposing mass of the existing building warned against a continuation of its compositional mechanisms and the extension is therefore a deliberate contrast, with a free style of geometry defined by the flow of movement through the building. A ramp rises up to the new entrance and opens onto a landscaped courtyard that serves as the centre of gravity. The formal fluidity of the extension is based on a brick-clad façade with metal sheets for the roof, a sloping plane that is echelonned to illuminate the halls and reflect the varying heights of the interior spaces.
