On July 20, 1969, Apollo astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the moon. By the end of 1972, five more

Apollo crews had landed there. These six missions resulted in 12 American

astronauts exploring and photographing the moon.

Apollo 11

Date: July 20, 1969Time There: 22 Hours

(Earth = 2 hours short of a day)

Fact: Neil Armstrong was the first

astronaut to set foot on the moon

Apollo 12Date: November 19, 1969

Time There: 32 Hours(Earth = 1 day and 8 hours)

Fact:The crew recovers instruments put on the moon in April of 1967. Because of these instruments, the effects of long-

term, exposure to the moon’s environment can now be measured.

Apollo 13Date: April 11, 1970

Fact: This mission did not successfully

land on the moon. They had difficulties with the spacecraft.

Date: February 5, 1971Time There: 34 Hours

(Earth = 1 day and 10 hours)

Fact:One famous moment is when

commander Alan Shepard hits two golf balls on the moon!

Apollo 15Date: July 30, 1971

Time There: 67 Hours(Earth = 2 days and 19 hours)

Fact: This is the first Apollo crew to use a

lunar rover for transportation.

Apollo 16Date: April 21, 1972

Time There: 71 Hours(Earth = 2 days and 23 hours)

Fact:This crew is the first to land in and

explore a highlands area.

Apollo 17

Date: December 11, 1972Time There: 75 Hours

(Earth = 3 days and 3 hours)

Fact:This is the longest and last Apollo

mission to land on the moon.
