4. Real life examples

DEFINITION OF NANOTECHNOLOGY

WHAT IS NANO SCALE?

One nanometer (1 nm) is about 3 atoms long.

1 nm is equal to a billionth of a meter (10 -9 m).

Nanotechnology is defined as a material,

device, or system, which can be precisely

controlled in shape and size at a nanoscale.

This can be fabricated in particular designs,

productions, characterizations and used in

various applications.

“Bottom-Up Approach”

Creating Nano-scale

materials by physically or

chemically breaking down

large materials.

Assembling Nano materials

atom-by-atom or molecule-by-

molecule (self assembling).

what makes it important?

Applications of Nanotechnology in

Construction & Buildings

Nanotechnology is widely used in

construction material such as:

In Concrete

In Steel

In coating

In Glass & Ceramic

In Wood

Nanotechnology can modify the structure

of concrete material and finally improves

in properties of materials as:

1. Bulk density

3. Volume stability

4. Durability

2. Mechanical performance

5. Sustainability of concrete

Types of Nanomaterial used in concrete:

- (1%) Carbon nanotubes/nanofibers (CNTs/ CNFs)

- Nano silica (𝑛𝑎𝑛𝑜 𝑆𝑖𝑂2)

- Titanium dioxide (𝑛𝑎𝑛𝑜 𝑇𝑖𝑂2)

- Nanoclay particles

- Nano-iron (𝑛𝑎𝑛𝑜 𝐹𝑒2𝑂3)

Disadvantages:

Fatigue (stress rises)

small resistance against fire (>750 F)

Brittle' Under certain conditions steel

may lose its ductility (HAZ)

Need of Nanomaterials in Steel:

Vanadium (V) and molybdenum (Mo) NPs >>>

improve the delayed fracture problems associated

with high strength bolts

Magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) NPs makes

the (HAZ) grains finer in plate steel >>> increase

in weld toughness

Copper NPs >>> reduces the surface roughness/

unevenness of steel & increases safety

Two international products of nanostructured steel

alloys in market:

Sandvik Nanoflex: (high qualities of a high

Young’s Modulus, high strength and

resistant to corrosion)

MMFX2 steel: Improved mechanical

properties compered to conventional steel

Fire protection (𝑛𝑎𝑛𝑜 𝑆𝑖𝑂2)

Self- cleaning & anti-dirt/fouling

surfaces (𝑛𝑎𝑛𝑜 𝑇𝑖𝑂2)

• Addition of Nanoparticles have shown significant

improvements than conventional construction

materials

• It is infinitely big and will make a lot of inventions

come true in construction and buildings
