Introduction
The two wheeler segment has been termed as the
most mature and the cost competitive segment of the
automobile industry with sales of over 4 million vehicles. It
is also the second largest two wheeler market in the
world. The reason being, that a two wheeler is affordable
by both high class and the middle class both in urban and
rural areas. It is also convenient for short distance
traveling within the city. Over the years the sales figures
of the two wheelers has increased to a very large extent.
The Indian two wheelers market, traditionally
dominated by scooter, has continued its recent shift
towards motor cycles, scooteretes and mopeds as urban
consumers aspiring to posses the latest in terms of looks
and technology, energy , efficient and sleeker looking
models have replaced the stayed ones in the market. In
the rural areas, consumers have come to prefer sturdier
bikes to withstand the bad road conditions.
Today’s two wheeler market is extremely
competitive in nature. The marketing and distribution
strategies of the two wheeler manufacturing, companies
are difficult to visualize by a layman. In view of this, the

History of Honda
By 1949, Honda came out the “D-type” Mr. Honda was
involved in every step of the two stroke D-type dreams
design and manufacture. This was Honda’s first motor
cycle. This was for from simply slotting a motor into a
push bike frame. Honda called his machine. ”The Dream”.
Because his dream of building a complete, motor cycle
had come true. Soichiro Honda was an engineer and was
always looking to produce better and sophisticated
machines.
Honda had another dream and it turned out to be the
146CC. OHV four storkes E-Type dream. A powerful
machine producing 51/2 bhp capable of 50 mph. it had a
steel frome and proper suspension front and rear. By

October 1951, the new dream was in production at the
rate of 130 units per day. Sales success allowed Honda to
focus vigorously on two key ingredients : Quality and
design.
In 1952, Honda produced the fist “CUB” F-type a ½
horsepower, 50 CC two stroke engine that was
produced in huge numbers, you could get one to fit
your push bike or buy the complete red and white
Honda “Auto Bai” less than a year after its introduction,
production was 6500 units per month, at the time it was
70% of Japans powered two wheeler market.
In 1954, a 200 cc scooter, the Juno, was
introduced to capture some of the sales from the Vespa
scooter copies that were being built in Japan. Honda
produced different versions of the dream and Benly
motorcycles over the next few years incorporating
different size engine (up to 350cc) and other
refinements.
In September 1957, Honda introduced their first
twin cylinder motorcycles, the sophisticated 250 cc OHc
four stroke C70 dream. It was the fore runner of
Honda’s High performance 125 and 250c twins.

NANDI HONDA, Bellary
In early 1958, Honda fitted an electric starter to
the 250cc dream and named it the c 71 and in 1959,
the latest benly an incredibly sophisticated 125 CC Ohc
four stroke twin, capable of 70 mhp was introduced as
the C92. In July 1958, Honda introduced in Japan what
became the worlds most successful motor cycle, the
c100 super cub.
By 1959, Honda was the largest motorcycle
manufacture in the world, producing 5,00,000 units a
year. This success turned Honda’s focus to another
dream. The American dream.
Honda motor company wanted to expand
internationally. They figured there was a world wide
market for light, economical, fun to ride motor cycles
surveys suggested Europe and South east Asia while
down playing the united states as potential market. The
reasons : Annual sales of only 60,000 units and a
negative motor cycling image.
Honda Management eventually ignored the
surveys. One reason : Honda’s model line of 50 cc to
300 cc models would not compete directly with the
large displacement models preferred by the U.S.
market Mr.Fujisawa championed another reason: The
worlds consumer economy focused on the U.S

Acceptance in the American market would offer as base
for world acceptance.
Kihachira Kawashim was selected as executive
Nice president and general manager of American
Honda Motor company. Joined by seven employees, he
opened a shop in a small store front office on pico
boulevard in Loss Angeles. Its operating capital : $
2,50,000. The date, June 4, 1959. The Market sought :
consumers wanting small light, easy to handle and
maintain two wheeled vehicles.
American Hondas first model line included the C
100 super cub, CB92 super sport 125, CA95 Benly
touring 150, CA71 dream touring 250, CE71 Dream
touring 250, CE71 Dram sport 2050, and C76 dream
touring 300.
From the beginning Mr. Honda Dedicated his
company to racing, racking up over 100 major motor
cycles championships round the world.
What was learned from building high performance
racing machines later led to the development of
ground breaking production motorcycles.
By this time, they controlled 65% of the Japanese
motor cycle market. But America still presented a
challenge fighting the poor image of motorcycling to
Veerashaiva College, Bellary. 6

replace that negative image with a new positive
image that would allow creating a new motor cycle
market.
The new image was presented in a new way with
general interest magazine advertising.
The Goal: Acquaint the nation with Honda
products, present motor cycle as socially acceptable
vehicles, and introduce the concept of motorcycling.
Honda and fun in the minds of Millions who never
previously considered the subject.
The strategy worked, opening the door to motor
cycling freedom for millions of Americans. Honda’s
small, affordable, easy-to-ride and easy-to live with
machines provided transportation and excitement.

SWOT
ANALYSIS

NANDI HONDA, Bellary
SWOT ANALYSIS
Honda has much strength to their name, they also
suffer from some major weakness. The primary
weakness of Honda is often times one of their major
strength as well. Honda divests much of its resources in
exploring new methods to enhance their products.
However they often conduct research and innovation in
fields that have no practical application until along into
the future.
For eg: Their fuel efficiency research, Honda was the
industry leader in the fuel efficiency from 1985 to
present investor guide .
Honda divested more of their resources to other
high end upgrades such as competing within the SUV
Market, they might have made much more profits.
Thus finding the balance between future research and
current profits is one of the major weakness with
Honda.
Another one of its weakness is that Honda relies
on its “Entry first, organize later”.
Veerashaiva College, Bellary. 21
21
NANDI HONDA, Bellary
Its corporate strategy appears to be enter
established markets with their innovative products
and develop on infrastructure and organization after
they observe low the market reacts.
The author finds that Honda has many more
strength than weakness, which is partly based on the
company’s outlook . Honda goal has been to make high
efficiency at a low cost.
Honda was gained advantage over its
competitors.
STRENGTHS
A reputation for producing high quality products
from cars to motorcycles to lawn movers.
The Largest manufacturer of motorcycles in the
world.
Won many awards for initial quality and customer
satisfaction.
Automobiles are liable and generally fuel efficient .
Research has afforded them competitiveness in
innovative products. The cutting edge asimo robot
and a successful motor sports programs provide
innovations that are passed to consumers as well
as press recognition.
Veerashaiva College, Bellary. 22
22
NANDI HONDA, Bellary
Won the moto GP manufacturers title and came in
second in the F1 constructors championship. While
these race and motorcycles are much different
than production vehicles. The lessons learned on
the track transfer to better performance and
engineering of future consumer vehicles.
They were a pioneer in engineering low emissions
internal combustion and hybrid technology.
The Only other manufacturer outside of
Mitsubishi to branch out into many other areas
outside of automobiles.
WEAKNESS
Products are fairly bland and inoffensive in terms
of styling.
Prices are higher for non luxury vehicles than
comparable modes by other manufacturers.
Not having a strong offering in a truck line.
Vehicles also have a reputation for being under
powdered or pokey econo boxes.
THREATS
* As far as new low emissions vehicles, they need to
put something on the marketing soon to recapture
their image as the green leader. The new hybrid
accord looks to fill that gap on paper. However even
Veerashaiva College, Bellary. 23
23
NANDI HONDA, Bellary
higher performance than the regular accord, the hybrid
is well just uninspiring. Yes is quicker and gets better
mileage and has more power, but it looks the same, a
car your parents would drive.
The Expansion into china and India will provide
increased sales and spread the image of Honda.
However caution should be taken. If Honda can put an
affordable transportation in the hands of the masses
then great, but if instead of affordable they opt for
cheap, then the two largest concentrations of people
on the planet will know Honda as crap.
Regaining the lead of low emissions is a risky
proposition. If Honda goes fuel cell and every one else
goes electric, then just rolled craps. But to be the
leader, they need to put something out to be
recognized. Even though the accord hybrid has better
performance, it still looks the same to the guy on the
street.

Nandi Honda is maintaining good relations with the

Nandi Honda has a good culture. The main thing is
that they help to the employees by giving education to
the employees children. I can say that is the best one.
At last I can say that Nandi Hondas managing aspects
