Myth

Myth is a story that is created to explain the

mysteries of the universe. Often explains how something connected with

humans or nature came to be. Usually features gods, goddesses, and other

beings with supernatural powers as well as human flaws

Myth

A legend is a story that is handed down from

the past that is believed to be based on real people and events.

Tells about a hero or heroine with special powers and admirable qualities.

Describes the hero’s or heroine’s struggle against a powerful force.

Legend

A tall tale is a humorous story about events

and characters that are exaggerated. This story often features a character that is

“larger than life”. Someone who is stronger, louder or more extraordinary than a regular person.

The story includes details that make the events and the character’s qualities seem unbelievable.

Tall Tale

A folk tale is a story that has been passed

down from one generation to another by being told aloud

They often feature both human and animal characteristics, and supernatural beings

A folk tale usually has a character who represents one or more qualities – for example, greed, honesty, kindness, cleverness.

A lesson about life is presented.

Folk Tale

Create an original story using the

characteristics of that genre (see details about myth, legend, and tales).

OR You may use another story and modify it to

your own. For example, you may keep the names of the characters but change the ending.
