TheMuralArtsProgramwasfoundedin1984aspartofanattempttocounteractgraffiti,whichwasspreadingacrossthecityatanalarmingrate.Astheprogramquicklygainedrespect,manygraffitiartistsabandonedtheirformermediumandstartedpaintingmurals,addingcolorandbeautytoPhiladelphia’sconcretewalls.TheMuralArtsProgramisresponsibleforover3,000muralsinthecity,whicharepaintedbyprofessionalartists,studentsandinmates.Theirgoalisto“uniteartistsandcommunitiesthroughacollaborativeprocessrootedinthetraditionsofmural-makingandtocreateartthattransformspublicspacesandindividuallives.”

Itriedtophotographamuralcompletedwithineveryyearofthepasttwodecadesandfromeachpartofthecity--north,south,eastandwest.Myprocessinvolvedchoosingamurallocatedatleastfivemilesfrommycurrentlocation,andthenphotographingallthemuralsIsawwhilebikingtomydestination.Intotal,Ibiked67.5mileswhileworkingonthisbook.
