High Tea FeverThe Mum’s Mail offices are abuzz with High Tea excitement! We have just over a month to go until THE event on the social calendar and if you’ve not yet secured yourself a ticket, it is too late. All 430 tickets were sold in a matter of 3 days back in March already – that must be a new re-cord? I am totally in awe of the amazing work the ladies of The Sunflower Fund do, and they are therefore once again the benefi-ciary of this year’s High Tea. For more info, please visit www.sunflowerfund.org.za or call 0800 12 10 82.
An event of this size would not be possible without the very generous sponsorship we receive from:
• Baby City• International Bank Vaults• La Lucia Mall• Graemor Lifestyle Accountants• Sanlam• Lemontree Concepts• Top Jocks
We are very grateful for their ongoing support. If you are lucky enough to possess a ticket for the High Tea, get dolled up in your Af-rican Queen finery on the 7th of Septem-ber!

5 Ways To Change Your Child’s Life (and your own)
First Woman CEO of PMB Chamber
Melanie Veness, current CEO (Chief Execu-tive Officer) of the Pietermaritzburg Cham-ber of Business, is the first woman in this position. Melanie is especially passionate about the city of PMB and strives, through her work at the chamber, to make a dif-ference, both economically and socially. Her aim is to improve on the employment rate in S.A. by helping business in the city become more successful. Because it rep-resents the interests of business in the PMB area, the chamber is involved in advoca-cy work and also provides training, busi-ness support and networking.
“I love that I am at the coal face and can get my hands dirty,” says Melanie. “I like to do things, more than talk about them. I love the variety and challenge of the work and I think it’s absolutely critical to love what you do because that passion is what energises and drives you to achieve.” Mel-anie also finds herself constantly learning. “Every new challenge faced by one of my members is a new learning opportunity for me – and I love a challenge!” she says. With such a busy chamber to see to how does Melanie balance work and home? “I am very blessed to have the wonder-ful, supportive family that I have,” she ex-plains. “When my children were very small I stayed home with them, and gradually started to go back to work, as they started to go to school, first half day and then full day. I still try to cook most evenings, but my husband’s culinary skills have im-proved drastically over the last 20 years!”
Melanie’s Business Tip: Approach things with an open mind. Be prepared to be convinced by another point of view and then be prepared to convince others when you need to.

Burns and Scalds:
Run cold water over the affected area for as long as possible. If the child has been burnt by a chemical agent, protect your-self. Apply burn shields (or clean dressing) immediately once the burnt area has been cooled down. Cut away or remove any tight clothing, watches etc. Do not remove anything burnt into the skin. Take your child to the nearest casualty unit.
Bleeding: If a child has a minor cut, wash the wound in warm soapy water. Pat dry and apply antiseptic cream. If the child has a major cut (e.g. put arm through a glass window) call for help immediately. Remember the word RED for blood (starting in reverse). Direct Pressure - apply pressure directly to the wound with a clean cloth or dress-ing. If there is something sticking out of the wound apply pressure to either side. Elevate - raise the wounded area above the heart. Rest and Reassure the child.
Fits and Convulsions: Very high temperatures, head injuries, epilepsy and poisoning can cause fits. If the child is having a fit, call for help im-mediately. Place the child on her side and make sure she is breathing (check breath-ing after fit as well). Do not hold the child tight or force anything into her mouth. Place cushions or blankets around her so she doesn’t injure herself. Estimate how long the fit lasted. Don’t give her anything to eat or drink when the fit has finished. If the fit is caused by high temperature cool her down with wet face cloth or fan. Take her to a doctor.

Mosaic PartyPlan a party with a difference for your child this year and organise a Mosaic Party at a venue of your choice. Just Imagine Mo-saics conducts parties for adults and chil-dren or for groups, such as kitchen teas, craft clubs, groups of friends or school and pre-school groups. Just Imagine will come to you (your home or elsewhere) and sup-ply tables and chairs as necessary. For this service a minimum of 10 people is required. Parties are also conducted at the Just Imagine studio in Kloof, Durban, for which no minimum number is required.
Just Imagine will supply trays of mosaic in pre-cut form for the guests, glue, brushes and grout and various blanks to work on - for example, a cross, a mirror or a blank board. Inclusive of all materials, parties cost R110 per person. The party lasts for two to three hours depending on num-bers, age and aptitude and participants will go home with a completed, creative and personal piece of art work.
Just Imagine Mosaics has an active, beautiful studio in the lovely area of Kloof, but travels regularly to Pietermaritzburg to conduct mosaic parties. They do com-missions on request and are affiliated to the Mosaic Association of South Africa. They have a gallery and periodically par-ticipate in exhibitions.

How Do I Know My Child is Ready for Big School?
This is a question that many parents ask. And although it is impor-tant that your child can hold a pen/pencil, sit quietly and listen to and understand instructions, these basic academic skills are not as important as emotional readiness. This is because starting “big school” is such a huge milestone for a child and younger children usually battle more than older ones, at least initially.
So what do you look for when trying to assess your child’s emo-tional readiness? Well, emotional readiness involves having the confidence and self-esteem to cope with all kinds of situations. This simply means that, developmentally, a five year old is usually less self-assured and able to cope with situations than a seven year old.
Children experience success very intensely and success breeds more success. If chil-dren master things with comparative ease, they’re more likely to be positive about their school work. However, if they battle to accomplish tasks, especially when their classmates are managing well, this could negatively affect their self-esteem. If you perceive yourself as a failure in Grade 1, that’s a big blow to your confidence. Sending a young, emotionally immature child to school where she’ll be confronted with a class of 20 or more children and a teacher who, however willing and mo-tivated, simply doesn’t have the time to support each child, is not the best way to ensure her success.
If you decide to have your child’s “school readiness” assessed, make sure that at-tention is given to his/her physical, social, emotional and intellectual readiness to tackle the activities of Grade 1 with enthu-siasm and enjoyment.

Helping the Community• Train a child in the way he should go. Even when they are old they will not depart from it (Proverbs 22:6). Two 10 year old girls, Rachel and Anna, accompanied their parents on a church mission trip to Mozam-bique recently. They helped to build a kitchen at a youth centre, handed out solar-powered audio bibles to local churches and played with the local children. Their parents were amazed at how well they adapted to conditions in the bush. Upon their return to South Africa Rachel and Anna spoke about their experiences at a church Holiday Club.

• Jade Sky Hike. A record 100 hikers met in icy conditions at the base of Sani Pass on 19 June to participate in this year’s Jade Sky Hike. The hike was in support of patient Nonnie Dedekind who faces far greater challenges as she battles cancer. Organisers Ian and Mandy Tyrer initiated this hike in 2007 to raise funds for nine year old Jade Pres-ton who was diagnosed with leukaemia and to raise awareness for The Sunflower Fund. Sadly, Jade lost her battle but the event continues to be an annual tribute to her. This year the organisers chose The Sunflower Fund as the sole beneficiary and an amaz-ing R12 700 was raised which will be used to tissue type new bone marrow stem cell donors for inclusion on the South African Bone Marrow Registry.
