Motto on the Great Seal of the United States

Adopted by Congress in 1782

Spangled Banner.

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall standBetween their loved home and the war's desolation!Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued landPraise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall waveO'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

From 1865 both mottos were on coins.

1883 Silver Dollar

E Pluribus Unum In God We Trust

On April 5, 1954, Postmaster General Arthur E. Summerfield announced the first U.S. Postage Stamp to carry the inscription, “In God We Trust.”

July 30, 1956

President Eisenhower approved Congress’ resolution making “In God We Trust” the national motto.
