DAY-the time required for Earth to rotate once on its axis

It takes 1 year or 365 ¼ days for the Earth to revolve once around the sun

The Earth’s rotation is the direct cause of daylight and night

The seasons are caused mainly by the 23.5 tilt of the Earth’s axis

Phases of the moon: changes in the moon’s appearance

The moon rotates around the Earth every 27.3 days

We always see the same side of the moon because it rotates on its axis and revolves around the Earth at the same rate.

Phase: the change in the sunlit area of one celestial body as seen from another celestial body.

When the moon revolves around Earth, the sunlight that reflects on the Earth changes too

Waxing: the sunlit part of the moon appears to get larger (growing)

Waning: the sunlit part of the moon appears to get smaller (shrinking)

Gibbous: swollen on one side

Eclipse: the shadow of one celestial body falls on another body

Lunar eclipse: when the Earth comes between the sun and the moon

the shadow of the Earth falls on the moon.

Solar Eclipse: when the moon comes between the Earth and the sun

the shadow of the moon falls on part of the Earth

We don’t see solar and lunar eclipses every month because the moon’s orbit around Earth is tilted with respect to Earth’s orbit around the sun

The moon usually passes above or below Earth’s shadow.

Tides: the daily changes in the level of ocean water.

The movement of the Earth, sun, and moon cause the seasons and the phases of the moon.

Tides are influenced by our sun and our moon.

The gravity of the moon pulls on every particle of the Earth.

This is more noticeable with the oceans because liquids move easier than solids.

The moon’s pull is strongest on the part of the Earth directly facing the moon.

High Tides: When part of the ocean is directly facing the moon, the water there bulges toward the moon.

Tidal Range: the difference between levels of ocean water at high and low tide.

Spring Tides: tides with the largest daily tidal range and occur every 14 days

During new and full moons

Neap Tides: tides with the smallest daily tidal range

During the first and third quarters of the moon
