Why?

Aims & Objectives

• Re-cap prior learning.

• Establish the differences between the 2 TV Comedies in terms of scheduling and Institutional values.

• Establish the differences between the 2 TV Comedies in terms of Target Audience and Audience pleasures.

• Look at exam questions from the June 2012 Paper and establish what YOU SHOULD include and refer to.

• Review the learning.

Using the Table you have been given (Page 1) YOU MUST:

• Establish at least 5 differences between the 2 comedies in terms of scheduling/Institutional ethos – for example what type of channel are they exhibited on? Are they repeated at other times? Are they syndicated out to other channels in order to create mass appeal?

• YOU SHOULD write down more examples if you can.

• YOU SHOULD also aim to address key terminology in your answer(s) such as PSB, Commercial Television etc.

• YOU COULD use the Blog to help you complete this task.

Using the Table you have been given (Page 2) YOU MUST:

• Identify 5 differences in terms of WHO each show is trying to target (Age, Gender, socio-economic group) and WHAT “audience pleasures” (Question 4 b) ) each text offers – for example ‘Outnumbered’ is a sit-com, whereas ‘ALOTO’ is a comedy quiz/panel show.

• YOU SHOULD try an include terms such as mass/niche appeal, theory such as ‘star appeal’ (Richard Dyer) and address the genre (type) of humour created.

• Key area to consider: HOW do the audience interact with the show?

• YOU COULD use the Blog to help you complete this task.

Look at the photocopy of an Exam style answer for Question 4 a) and 4 b).

YOU MUST read through BOTH answers and highlight areas the examiner stated they “covered”, “showed” or “explained”.

YOU SHOULD then look at the structure and write an answer for both questions based on the tasks you have completed today for the 2 TV Comedy Case Studies:
