Moats in MesopotamiaIn Mesopotamia they had many problems. One of those problems were attacks by neighboring

communities. To solve this problem, they built strong walls around their city. They also dug moats() outside the city walls to prevent

enemies from entering the city. In case of attack, farmers fled the fields and took safety inside the

city walls.

The Definition of Moat1. a deep, wide trench, usually filled with

water, surrounding the rampart of a

fortified place, as a town or a castle. 2. any

similar trench, as one used for confining
