Grades don’t just show what you know, but also show how hard you have worked This includes taking initiative and owning your education

Ms. S… I know I’m smart.How can I show it?

Ask and answer questions I ask questions to make sure you UNDERSTAND.

It’s ok if your answer is wrong. We’ll fix it.

UNDERSTAND the material Don’t memorize. You won’t remember it, and you won’t be able to answer questions that make you THINK.

PRACTICE During class (Class work)

After class (HW, Study, Tutoring)

Stay focused The work will be really difficult at times, but you WILL be successful if you work hard.

Objectives

By the end of today, SWBAT…

Explain why cells go through mitosis

Describe what happens during interphase

Humans are filled with cells like this beaker is filled with Skittles

Skittles

Humans grow by getting more cells!

How many cells do we begin with?

2

How do we get more?

Reproduction and Growth!Key Point #1: Multicellular organisms get bigger because they get more cells. Two types of cells:

Gametes = Sex cells (sperm and egg cells)

Somatic cells = all other cells in your body

One cell divides into two cells…

…then four, eight, sixteen…

Mitosis = the process of

somatic cell division.

Mitosis? Yeah!

What is the function of mitosis? THINK: Why does mitosis occur?

What types of cells does mitosis occur in? Give a specific example!

Interphase

Key Point #2: The time between cell divisions is called interphase Think INTER-MISSION! Time for normal cell activities.

Interphase?

Describe what happens during interphase.

DNA

Key Point #3: ALL cells have DNA organized into units called chromosomes DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid): Genetic information. Instructions for how a cell should run.

Chromosomes: pieces of coiled DNA. (Look like Xs.)

What is the difference between DNA and chromosomes?

2 Legit 2 Quit

In humans, somatic cells have 23 pairs of chromosomes.Somatic cells

are 2N N = # of copies of each chromosome

Why are our cells 2N?One copy from mommy

One copy from daddy

DNA

Key Point #4: Cells must make an EXACT copy of their DNA before they divide Why does a cell need to make a copy?Every cell needs to have a set of instructions (DNA).

Ok…

If we have two copies of each chromosome, how many copies do we have after we duplicate? FOUR!

Using N… 4N!

4N

Notes Reflection (GP)

In your notes, you should be able to find answers FAST! Question goes up. Hand up when you find the answer.

If you do not have the answer in your notes, ADD IT IN!!!

Guided Practice

What is the process of cell division called?

Guided Practice

How do organisms get bigger?

Guided Practice

After mitosis, the two new cells are ___________ to each other.

Guided Practice

Explain the function of mitosis.(Why does it happen?)

Guided Practice

Describe the function of DNA.

Guided Practice

What are chromosomes?

Guided Practice

How many N does a somatic cell have normally?

Guided Practice

What is going on in the cell during interphase?

Guided Practice

How many N does a somatic cell after the cell duplicates its DNA?

Guided Practice

If a martian has 16 pairs of chromosomes,How many N are there?

Guided Practice

If a martian has 16 pairs of chromosomes,How many chromosomes are there in total?

Independent Work TimeAnswer the following questions in COMPLETE SENTENCES in your notes.

1. Growth is one of the characteristics of life.

Explain how organisms grow. What is this process of

growth called?

2. Describe the function of DNA. Show off question: What

does DNA stand for?

3. Describe the structure and function of chromosomes.

4. Describe the two types of cells in the human body.

5. How many copies of each chromosome does a normal somatic cell have?

Why this many copies? What is the short-hand way to

show this?

6. Explain why a cell creates an exact copy of its DNA.

What is the short-hand way to show this?

7. What is the time in-between cell divisions called? Describes what happens during this time.

What is an easy way to remember the name of phase?

Exit Question

1. Why do cells perform mitosis?

2. What happens during interphase?

3. What is the difference between DNA and chromosomes?Write in complete sentences!

Don’t talk during the Exit Question!
