House Dust Mite - Dermatophagoides sp.
• House dust mites live in our homes and feed on the microbes that grow on cast skin flakes, hair, and other detritus. The average pillow is reputed to be home to 10,000 dust mites, house dust mites are the most important source of allergens in house dust. Severe allergies, rhinitis, eczema (skin inflammation), and asthma (respiratory disorder) are induced by the allergens these mites produce and affect 50-100 million people worldwide.
Control of dust mite
• Like most of the tiny organisms that share our homes, dust mites are less troubling if their population levels remain low. Reducing the humidity in the home (e.g. increased ventilation, air conditioning) and removing upholstered furniture, carpets and other household items that accumulate skin flakes and retain humidity are good first steps in the control of dust mite populations.
Transmission of disease
• 1. Jungle encephalitis (virus)
• 2. Epidemic hemorrhagic fever (virus)
• 3. Q fever (rickettsia)
• 4. Endemic typhus
• 5. Scrub typhus (rickettsia)
