Migrating data between cloud services

Gone are the days when one had to store media and important data on physical

devices like hard drives and pen drivers, Cloud computing has revolutionized the

way we store, migrate and manage data.

The basic principle of Cloud Services is that instead of storing data on a local personal

computer, data is stored on a server which is hosted at a remote location. Users can also access various tools in an On Demand basis

from the Cloud and save on purchasing the tool license on their own; this is especially useful if the tool is required only for a short duration.

The problem arises when users want to migrate data between different cloud computing services. Migrating data

between cloud services is one of major areas of research today.

Some of the problems in migrating data between cloud services include Data movement and Encryption, hardware

incompatibity and maintaining consistency of data across environments. These problems arise because in the Cloud

computing model the service provider chooses the hardware, Operating system and various other environment variables, this

is unlike the traditional model where the user chooses the configuration of his/her personal computer.

The major cloud services providers are Microsoft, Google and SalesForce. For Example if a user wants to migrate between

cloud services; Windows Azure and Google App Engine, he/she might face the following hurdles.

When migrating data and applications to and fro between cloud services, the data might turn out to

incompatible or corrupt due to network configurations, operating system etc.

When migrating data and applications to and fro between cloud services, the data might turn out to

incompatible or corrupt due to network configurations, operating system etc.

In case of our example Microsoft’s Azure is a Windows based operating system whereas Google’s App Engine is an Android

based operating system, the above state difficulties in migrating data between cloud services mainly arise due to the above stated difference. In order to overcome the above stated difficulties and provide users with a more friendly way of

migrating tools between cloud services there are many tools available in the market

•Different tools use different approaches while migrating data between cloud services. But the basic principle is these tools

successfully migrate data between cloud services by either replicating the operating conditions in the source cloud

environment in the target environment or by hosting the application and data in a virtual machine so that the process

becomes independent of the target cloud’s operating condition. These tools are therefore a boom while migrating data between

cloud services
