Discovering what the Bible says about suffering and evil

He Leadeth Me

He leadeth me, O blessèd thought!O words with heav’nly comfort fraught!

Whate’er I do, where’er I beStill ’tis God’s hand that leadeth me.

He leadeth me, He leadeth me,

By His own hand He leadeth me;

His faithful follower I would be,

For by His hand He leadeth me.

He leadeth me, He leadeth me,

By His own hand He leadeth me;

His faithful follower I would be,

For by His hand He leadeth me.

Sometimes mid scenes of deepest gloom, Sometimes

where Eden’s bowers bloom, By waters still, over troubled sea, Still ‘tis His hand that leatheth

me.

He Leadeth Me

He leadeth me, He leadeth me,

By His own hand He leadeth me;

His faithful follower I would be,

For by His hand He leadeth me.

Lord, I would place my hand in Thine,Nor ever murmur nor repine;Content, whatever lot I see,

Since ’tis my God that leadeth me.

He Leadeth Me

He leadeth me, He leadeth me,

By His own hand He leadeth me;

His faithful follower I would be,

For by His hand He leadeth me.

He Leadeth Me

And when my task on earth is done,

When by Thy grace the vict’ry’s won,

E’en death’s cold wave I will not flee,

Since God through Jordan leadeth me.

Trading My Sorrows

(Job 38:2-5)

“Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Gird up your loins like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me. “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements—surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? Did you give me advice on where to place the Pleiades, or tell me how to cast the Orion across the skies?”

There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was blameless and

upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil.

Trading My Sorrows

(1 Chron 29:11)

Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours.

Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all.

Unbiblical Responses:

What did I do to deserve this?

(Meaning: I’ve done nothing to justify this level of suffering; I judge myself to be good, and I judge any sins I’ve committed to be minor and excusable).

Unbiblical Responses:

Why is this happening to ME?

(Meaning: Other people are worse than me, so God is unjust in punishing me at this unfair and undeserved level. I judge myself to be better than others, and my sins to be smaller than theirs – small enough to overlook).

Unbiblical Responses:

How can God bring good out of this?

(Meaning: I fully understand this situation, so I can accurately determine there is no redemptive outcome good enough to justify what I’m experiencing).

Unbiblical Responses:

How can God be good and allow this?

(Meaning: My suffering is not good, so God can’t be good if He allows this. God must be bad if I’m suffering this way).

(Dan 4:35)

All the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, “What have you done?”

(Rom 9:20-21)

But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?” Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use?”

Unbiblical Responses:

1. Self-focused response2. One-to-one sin-to-suffering ratio
