hlitchfield@shawmedia.com
MORRIS – Kathy Kasap andJoyce Denker traveled Fridayto Morris from Tonica andOglesby to see what bargainsthey could find at the newlyopened Goodwill store.
“I came in to look for a jack-et, which I found,” Denkersaid. “I found a cookie jar anda red shirt for Christmas.”
Her cart was filled with alittle something for everyone– pajamas for a grandson, somecoasters for her husband.
Kasap said she tries to lim-it what she wants before shecomes in the door. This trip, she sought Christmas items. She found an entire aisle ofthem.
“It looks like they havesome good stuff here,” she said.
The women said after theyfinished at the new store, which opened Wednesday, they were going to find some-where local to eat and maybecheck out some other localstores.
Megan Baker-Simonich,the store manager, said shehopes the new Goodwill storewill add to the other hometownbusinesses as a destinationplace to shop.
Morris is the 11th store forthe Goodwill of Central Illi-nois district, which covers a21-county service area. Bak-er-Simonich said her store wastop in sales for the district thefirst two days it was open.
“I’m very happy with the re-sponse from the community,”she said.
Morris Mayor Richard Kop-czick said he’s glad to see thestore has officially opened.
“We’re very glad to haveGoodwill become a citizen ofthe city of Morris,” Kopczicksaid. “I’m very happy to wel-come them.”
Gretchen Piper, director ofcommunications for Goodwillof Central Illinois, said the or-ganization put a lot of thoughtinto where it would open itsnext store and believed Mor-ris, being in the northernmostarea of its district, was the per-
fect place.Each district of Goodwill
stores is governed by its ownboard of directors. Each offersdifferent services to commu-nities, as well as different spe-cials.
The Morris store does notuse the loyalty card taken atother district locations, but itwill offer a color of the weekeach week, where any itemwith a price tag of a particularcolor is 50 percent off.
Baker-Simonich said thecolor changes each Monday, socustomers know when the nextsale starts. This past week’scolor was orange and a newcolor will be chosen Monday.
The store was stocked withitems from a Goodwill ware-house in Peoria, to make surethere were plenty of items forcustomers until local dona-tions pick up. She said Good-will has already had 16 dona-tions in the first two days andhopes to see more as peoplerealize the store is open.
Goodwill does not acceptdonations of large appliances, televisions, mattresses or box
springs, or any item that holdsFreon, the manager said.
In addition to used items, the store also offers new itemssuch as socks, batteries, glass-es and natural soaps.
Goodwill hired about 35people locally to work at thestore and used services offeredby Joliet Junior College to fillremaining positions.
“We are very excited tobecome a part of this com-
munity,” Goodwill Presidentand CEO Patty Fuchs saidin a news release. “We couldtell from the start that Morriswould welcome us with openarms. Goodwill thrives in com-munity-minded towns likeMorris.”

County building remodelingprojects moving forward
By NICK SAMUELnsamuel@shawmedia.com
MORRIS – A new recep-tionist area with cabinets, countertops and two slidingglass windows might soon beadded to the Grundy CountyHealth Department.
The health department isin the Grundy County Admin-istration Building,1320 UnionSt., Morris. Plans to relocatethe receptionist area movedforward Thursday when thecounty’s Facilities Commit-tee agreed to take $12,200 outof the capital improvementsfund to pay for the project.
“When they go into thehealth department, they’ll ac-tually go to the receptionistarea and check in,” Ann Gill, vice chairwoman of the com-mittee, said after the meeting.
The space where the healthreceptionist area will be isnow an office for the on-dutysheriff deputy at the countybuilding.
The sheriff’s deputy’s officewill move to the main recep-tionist area in the front of thebuilding, and the receptionistarea will move to an officeelsewhere in the administra-tion center.
For the building’s main re-ception area, Gill said WerdenBuilders Inc. will cut a hole inthe brick wall that surroundsthe office it will move to, andwill install a counter in the of-fice for $2,950.
The money to pay for therelocation of the main recep-tionist area, she added, willcome out of next year’s bud-get.
The Finance Committee isset to vote at Monday night’smeeting on designating themoney for the health depart-ment project and the countyreceptionist project.
Philip Jass, public healthadministrator, said the countywill next need a building per-mit from Morris.
“I’m very happy about how
fast it moved,” he said afterThursday’s meeting. “Hope-fully, we’ll have it done byJan. 1.”
The health department hasfour receptionist areas for itsfour divisions: environmentalhealth, mental health, nursingand senior services.
Jass said the new recep-tionist area, which will man-age both the mental healthand senior services divisions, will allow the department tohave more control over whereclients go.
“We’re not eliminating po-sitions, just making it moreefficient with existing staff,”Jass said.
Jass first introduced the re-ceptionist project to the Facili-ties Committee last December.
He previously said not hav-ing a central check-in systemfor the department can lead topatients wandering the build-ing or the health departmentwithout administrators know-ing.
Nick Samuel – nsamuel@shawmedia.com
Dian Brown, office manager for Grundy County’s Health Department, demonstrates where the door to the new receptionist area will be cutin half to provide a counter at the Grundy County Administration Build-ing.

Community to honor veterans TuesdayBy HEIDI LITCHFIELD
hlitchfield@shawmedia.com
MORRIS – Honoring local
veterans for what they have
done for this country is an
important responsibility, said
Ken Buck, superintendent of
the Grundy County Veterans
Assistance Commission.
“It’s always important to
recognize the importance of
veterans on Nov. 11,” Buck
said.

ended World War I on Nov.
11, 1918, the United States has
honored American veterans of
all wars.
On Tuesday, several com-
munities will come together
by hosting an event. In Morris
that includes a parade to the
Grundy County Courthouse,
in Coal City the library will
sponsor an event that includes
a flag-raising ceremony, and
comments from commanders
of the American Legion and

MinookaHigh School principal search down to fourBy JEANNE MILLSAP
Shaw Media Correspondent
MINOOKA – MinookaCommunity High School’sprincipal search committeehas narrowed down its selec-tion to four candidates for theleadership position.
At the Minooka Communi-ty High School board meetingThursday, SuperintendentJim Blanche said the fourcandidates are “all experi-enced administrators.”
The district is using a freeweb-based human resourcerecruitment site to searchfor a replacement for formerprincipal Darcie Kubinski, who resigned last summer.
“I’m excited about the po-
tential for leadership to comein here,” Blanche said. “I wasimpressed with the caliber ofcandidates.”
Interviews and site vis-its are the next step, thenBlanche will bring selectedindividuals to the board andto meet groups of staff, stu-dents and parents.
Exit surveys offerstudent perspective
Also at the meeting, boardmembers were presentedwith results from exit sur-veys given to students lastMay.
The purpose of the sur-veys, according to interimAssistant Principal BertKooi, was to allow students
the opportunity to share im-
pressions of their overall
high school experiences with
the board, teachers and ad-
ministrators.
The survey gave 15 state-
ments, about which students
could answer, “always, most-
ly, sometimes or never.”
Students gave their most
positive scores to the state-
ments, “I feel safe at my
school,” “My teachers ex-
pect me to do my best,” and
“MCHS school personnel
treat me with respect.”
They responded least fa-
vorably to, “When I need ex-
tra help or don’t understand
part of the lesson, I ask or tell
my teacher,” “My schoolwork
positively challenges me,”
and “My school is preparing
me well for the future.”
Board member Chris Kobe
said the survey helped stu-
dents have a voice, but that
the answers would have been
more informative if the stu-
dents were asked to give sug-
gestions on how to improve
areas they graded low.
Mark French said the re-
sults could be used as an
additional tool to surveys
teachers give in individual
classrooms and the Illinois
5Essentials Survey, which
is taken in the spring and
administered by the Illinois
State Board of Education.
“I’m excited about the
potential for leadership
to come in here. I was
impressed with the
caliber of candidates.”

OPINIONOUR VIEW
Two-party rule isneeded to fix Illinois
One-party rule has notbeen good for Illinois. Since2003, Democrats have con-trolled both chambers of theGeneral Assembly and thegovernor’s office.
In that time, this state’sfiscal situation has crum-bled. We spend too much. Wetax too much. Our policieshave forced too many jobcreators across state lines. With no checks and balancesthat a two-party system pro-vides, Democratic leadersin state government havesteered Illinois to the brinkof financial insolvency.
Republicans have notbeen competitive statewidein part because they’vealienated too many voters onissues other than fiscal ones.
With his win last week,Governor-elect Bruce Raun-er has created a blueprint forfellow Republicans hoping towin state or Congressionaloffices in Illinois.
Focus on matters of fiscalrelevance; express a willing-ness to work in a bipartisanmanner to fix real problems;and leave social issues “offthe table,” as Rauner saidtime and again during hiscampaign.
Rauner defeated Dem-ocratic Gov. Pat Quinn bymore than 160,000 votes. Hewon every Illinois countybut Cook, and he did it byfocusing on jobs, taxes, theeconomy, downsizing gov-ernment and working withlegislators on both sides ofthe aisle to solve Illinois’many issues.
Whenever he was askedabout gay marriage, whichbecame legal in Illinois thisyear, he refused to providehis personal view but saidhe would not work to changestate law. He similarly saidhe would not try to repeal
medical marijuana eventhough he would not havesigned the bill that legalizedit.
Four years ago, down-state Republican Sen. BillBrady was leading Quinn inmost polling months beforethe gubernatorial election. But his voting record inthe General Assembly andcomments he made duringhis campaign suggested afar-right social agenda. Itscared too many moderateIllinois voters away. Helost by 32,000 votes despiteQuinn’s poor record on jobs, taxes and the economy.
Of course, fiscally conser-vative yet socially moderateRepublicans have to wintheir primaries before theycan win a general election. If the GOP hopes to repeatRauner’s success, it’s vitalthat moderate Republicansget out and vote in the pri-mary.
The issue is not one ofRepublicans versus Demo-crats. More importantly, it isabout effective government.Politicians with their ownradical agendas have littlechance of accomplishingmuch in the current messthat is Illinois. Our state hasenormous fiscal problems, and we need serious, fiscallyminded legislators who canset aside the “party line” andfocus on solving them.
When he takes office Jan.12, 2015, Rauner will be thefirst Republican governor ofIllinois since George Ryanleft office in 2003. Voterselected him because theytrust he can do a better jobthan Quinn in fixing Illinois’numerous fiscal issues.

Ben Bradlee: A tale of Kennedy’s courierBen Bradlee, the legendary
Washington Post editor who
died recently, has been widely
praised for his work building
up The Washington Post and
bringing down Richard Nixon.
His guidance of the paper’s
Watergate coverage thrilled a
generation, and maybe two gen-
erations, of aspiring journalists.
But the many extravagant
tributes to Bradlee have paid
less attention to his relation-
ship with an earlier president,
John F. Kennedy. It’s not that
their friendship was a secret;
indeed, Bradlee wrote a book
about it. It’s just an embarrass-
ment, and when it came time
to evaluate Bradlee’s life, the
sycophancy of his association
with JFK did not fit the image,
carefully tended by colleagues
and friends, of the journalist
as a courageous puncturer of
inflated reputations.
Bradlee’s book, “Conver-
sations With Kennedy,” told
the story of his, and his wife,
Tony’s, friendship with John
and Jacqueline Kennedy from
its beginning in 1958 until the
JFK assassination in 1963.
For much of the book,
Bradlee seemed impossibly
starstruck.
He stayed close to Kennedy
as the new president took office.
There were fun dinners, fre-
quent phone calls, trips to the
country. White House dances
were “dazzling,” Bradlee wrote:
“The crowd is always young.
The women are always gor-
geous, and you have to pinch
yourself to realize that you are
in the Green Room of the White
House.”
Things were going great
until August 1962, when Look
magazine published an article
with the headline “Kennedy vs.
The Press: Never have so few
bawled out so many so often for
so little, as the Kennedys battle
reporters.” The piece quoted
Bradlee saying, “It’s almost
impossible to write a story they
like. Even if a story is quite
favorable to their side, they’ll
find one paragraph to quibble
with.”
Big mistake. Kennedy im-
mediately froze Bradlee out; no
more fun dinners. Bradlee was
wounded, writing that he went
“from regular contact –- dinner
at the White House once and
sometimes twice a week, and
telephone calls as needed in ei-
ther direction – to no contact.”
Exile forced Bradlee to
examine his relationship with
the president. “What, in fact,
was I?” he asked. “A friend, or a
journalist? I wanted to be both.”
Eventually Bradlee behaved
himself, served his time in Sibe-
ria, and was let back into JFK’s
good graces, without ever fully
answering the question.
As a journalist, Bradlee’s
friendship with Kennedy
brought him prestige and the
envy of competitors, but noth-
ing really worth compromising
his integrity. “Kennedy never
gave Ben big scoops, particular-
ly during the [1960] campaign”
wrote Himmelman, “but he
handed out tidbits.”
“Conversations With Kenne-
dy,” which Bradlee wrote at the
height of Watergate, got some
rough reviews when it came
out in 1975. (And the reviewers
didn’t have some of the stuff
Himmelman found later, which
made Bradlee look even worse.)
Maybe the toughest notice
came from Jacqueline Kenne-
dy, who, according to Himmel-
man, said to Bradlee about his
writing on JFK: “It tells more
about you than it does about
him.”
After Bradlee’s death, a
number of remembrances
noted the many journalists who
wanted more than anything to
be like Ben. Conversations with
Kennedy is an extended lesson
on why they shouldn’t.

Football teams could enjoy home cooking through playoffs
Something football players
and coaches never do in the
playoffs is look ahead to the
upcoming weeks. That’s not
a safe thing to do when it’s a
lose-and-your’re-done situa-
tion. Lose focus on the game
at hand because you are look-
ing ahead to a possible future
matchup, and you can find
yourself staying at home and
wondering what happened.
The job of looking ahead
falls on fans and us media
types. To that end, if Morris
keeps winning, and the other
games play out the way the
seeds say they should, the
Redskins will be at home
until the state championship
game in Champaign.
Here’s how it would shake
down. If Morris beats Ma-
homet-Seymour today and
Metamora beats Peoria, then
the Redskins would host
Metamora next week because
Metamora has had two home
games in the playoffs and
Morris has had only one.
The team with the fewest
home games gets to host.
That’s the IHSA rule. Now,
if Morris beats Metamora at
home, which is not out of the
question because that’s some-
thing they already have done
this season in Week 2. The
other side of the bracket has
Springfield Sacred Heart-Grif-
fin playing host to Highland.
That would be Sacred Heart’s
third home game, as opposed
to Morris only having two,
and Morris would host Sacred
Heart in the semifinals.
Of course, all of that is
assuming that the higher seed
wins every game. As Morris
proved last week, seeds don’t
always mean much. A lower
seed coming up with a win
would put Morris hosting
through the semis scenario
out the window, but it’s fun
to think about, because the
Redskins historically have
been nearly invincible at
home during the playoffs.
Coal City also has been
tough to beat at the John
Dzuris Athletic Complex.
If the Coalers can beat St.
Edward today, and Manteno
beats Dixon, then next week’sgame will be in Coal City. TheCoalers lost at Manteno by apoint in the regular season, and you would have to thinkthat the home field advantagewould be enough to switchthat result. If the seeds holdup on the other side andtop-seeded Rockford Lutheranand fourth-seeded Johnsburgwin, then Lutheran wouldhost Johnsburg. And if Lu-theran wins that one, guesswhat? It has to come to CoalCity for the semis.
So, it’s possible the semifi-nals could see a game in CoalCity and a game in Morris onthe Saturday before Thanks-
giving. If the administrationscan get together and decideto schedule the games aboutthree hours apart, therewould be time for fans of bothto make it to both games ina show of area support. Howcool would that be?

A couple of Saturday’sago my youngest son, Cody, sauntered up to me with atoothy grin. I’ve been a fatherlong enough to know beneaththat enamel some sort of planlurked. My instincts flashedto life.
“What?” I asked him.“Wouldn’t it be a beautiful
day to go shooting?” he said. For once, I really chewed
on what he said and didn’tdismiss it with the wave ofa hand. The sun beat downwith its glorious rays and theblue sky covered the horizon.Yes, it was perfect.
“Cody, I think that itwould be a great day to goshooting.” He scampered offto get his things ready.
The previous year wit-nessed my purchase of a niceyouth model pump shotgunfor the boys. We fired itsome, but it spent most ofthe past months keeping therest of the guns in my safecompany.
I handed off a list ofchores to be done beforewe drove to the farm toblast some clay birds. Lukeattacked his tasks, and Codymade short work of his. Theyboth waited patiently forme to complete a few morethings.
Honestly, it didn’t concernme at all if I finished myto-do list. Another one wouldtake its place almost instan-taneously anyway.
After rummaging throughmultiple closets, shelves, bins and other storage places,I located everyone’s shootinggoggles and ear protection. The boys’ youth shotgunsat cased up and ready. Thehard choice remained; whatshotgun would I take.
I eventually decidedupon an Italian made Bredasemi-automatic. The gun feltcomfortable, shot easily, andthe last time I went out, Itook the Remington. It’s niceto mix it up a bit.
On the way to the farm weswung by the local sportinggoods department and pickeda few packages of 20 gaugetrap loads for the boys toburn through. I grabbed onebox, but Cody felt confidentthat at least two would beneeded. You never can havetoo much ammo; at least thatis what I tell my wife.
Once we pulled up to theedge of the freshly harvestedfield, I reminded the boys ofall the safety concerns, howwe were going to do this, andwho would go first. Theyactually listened. Good thing.Firearm safety took top pri-ority. In fact, they would beloading and firing only oneshell at a time.
I supervised their prepara-tion and then grabbed some
orange clay birds. The firstone the young gun missed.Same with the second. Ispent some time showinghim how the barrel is justan extension of your bodyand reminded Cody to keephis cheek down on the stockthrough the entire shot.
I tossed the next bird anda couple of pieces erupt-ed from it as a few pelletsslammed into the edge.Smiles followed. The nextbird received the full on-slaught of shot. As a result, itturned to powder and vapor-ized from sight. A giant grinstretched across Cody’s face.
“My turn.”I saw Luke approaching.
There is no part of a teenageboy’s psyche that can possi-bly allow a younger siblingto outperform him. Codystepped back and handed the870 to his older brother.
I tossed the first bird andLuke shot over it. I remindedhim to keep both eyes open
so it would be easier to trackthe clay target. He did on thenext one and splintered acouple of pieces off.
His confidence boiledover and he shouted “pull”as fast as he could. That kidproceeded to center up andblast the next seven targetsin a row. After the last one,he handed the pump shotgunback to his brother withoutsaying a thing. There wasnothing to be said. Actions dospeak louder than words.
I took my turn, busted afew, and worked on Codydecided to ask me to go shoot-ing on that gorgeous day. I doneed to schedule a rematchsoon, though. For some rea-son, I’m just not OK with my16-year-old outshooting me. Itmust be a guy thing.

Bears, Packers even – except under centerOne of the most oft used and
least accurate clichés in sports
is when the announcer with
the voice from God booms,
“And in this, one of the great-
est rivalries in the NFL, you
can throw out the record books
when these two get together!”
No, unfortunately you can’t.
With Jay Cutler at quarter-
back, the Bears are 1-10 against
the Green Bay Packers, and
Cutler has thrown 13 touch-
downs and 20 interceptions.
It’s worse at Lambeau Field,
where the Bears are 0-3 when
Cutler plays, and he’s thrown
two touchdowns and 10 inter-
ceptions.
Conversely, the Packers
are 11-2 against the Bears with
Aaron Rodgers, and not count-
ing last year’s game in which
he was knocked out early in
the first quarter, Rodgers is
undefeated against the Bears
at home.
It is true, these matchups
are not actually Cutler vs.
Rodgers, as they are never on
the field at the same time.
But the quarterback does
have the biggest impact of any
player on his team, and we
have witnessed Rodgers mak-
ing his team much better than
it is without him, while Cutler
has served as an anchor more
often than he has a propeller.
Another reason the conver-
sation so often turns to Cutler
and Rodgers when these two
teams get together is a look at
their respective offenses.
Matt Forte is one of the
three or four best running
backs in the NFL today. Eddie
Lacy is close but still working
to join that group.
Until a few weeks ago,
there nearly was unanimous
consent around the league that
Brandon Marshall and Alshon
Jeffery were the best pair of
starting receivers in the NFL,
with Jordy Nelson and Randall
Cobb ranked several groups
below.
The depth of both groups
was a question, although the
recent play of Davante Adams
gives the Pack an advantage
there.
Martellus Bennett gives the
Bears a big edge at tight end,
as the Packers have no consis-
tent performer here, although
Bennett could be doubtful for
this game with bad ribs.
The offensive lines are
probably even, as each boasts a
Pro Bowl guard in the Packers’
Josh Sitton and the Bears’
Kyle Long, and are reasonably
solid everywhere else, al-
though both can be exposed in
the pass rush.
Is it the defenses that give
the Packers such a huge edge?
Actually, the Bears are
better than the Packers in total
defense, 22nd vs. 26th, and the
Bears have a big edge against
the run where they are 13th in
the league and the Packers are
dead last at 32nd.
The Packers are better at
stopping the pass, ranking
ninth in the league, while the
Bears are 23rd, but the Bears
are better sacking the quarter-
back, 11th in sack percentage
to Green Bay’s 15th, and the
Bears are much better in third-
down efficiency, 20th to the
Packers’ 30th ranking.
Green Bay is better in
points allowed, 19th, while the
Bears are 29th, but both teams
struggle on defense and it’s
almost impossible to give an
edge either way.
So what we have is the
Bears and Packers are pretty
much equal everywhere on the
field, except at quarterback –
and possibly on the sidelines.
Based on their respective
bodies of work, you have to
give an edge to Packers coach
Mike McCarthy over Marc
Trestman, but if the Bears get
a win Sunday night, Trestman
actually moves to 2-2 against
Green Bay.
At the end of the day no
matter how various members
of the media and the clubs’ re-
spective fan bases want to spin
this, it really does come down
to Rodgers vs. Cutler.
The Bears have an excel-
lent chance to win this one
if they can pressure Rodgers
and move him off his spot and
keep a hand in his face while
he moves – and whether Cutler
can exorcise the Packers
demons that appear to have
haunted him since he became
a Bear.
If both QBs play their usual
games, the Bears are in trouble
again.

CROSSWORD SUDOKU BRIDGE by Phillip Alder
CELEBRITY CIPHER
PUZZLES
Jacob Bronowski, who wrote thewonderful “Ascent of Man” series, said,“Knowledge is an unending adventureat the edge of uncertainty.”
During most bridge deals, you havesome definite knowledge -- your ownhand -- and some fairly reliable data-- the actions of the other players. However, there are deals in whichyou will be faced with uncertainty. Intoday’s deal, who can make what?
North should have openedone club, not one diamond, whichcoincidentally would have picked offhis opponents’ suit. When he bid onediamond, East had an easy two-clubovercall. (He was too short in spadesfor a takeout double.) Then, South’stwo-spade response promised 10points. But he liked his big diamond fitand club void.
West produced a pre-emptive clubraise. (With a good hand, he wouldhave cue-bid three diamonds.) Afterthat, North raised spades, East bidgame to make, South took an each-way bet with five spades, and Eastdoubled for penalty.
Note that South was right. Evenwith the clubs breaking 3-0, five clubsis laydown. Suppose South leads thespade jack. East wins, cashes dummy’stop trumps, then runs the heart jack. When the finesse wins and the suit is3-3, dummy’s spade loser disappearson East’s fourth heart.
Against five spades doubled, Westled the club ace. Declarer ruffed anddrove out the spade ace. He ruffed thesecond club, drew trumps, and ran thediamonds, pitching two hearts fromdummy.
Five spades doubled bid and made!To defeat the contract (by two tricks),West had to lead the heart jack.
Who canmake
which contract?

Dear Doctor K: For years I’vetaken niacin to raise my HDLcholesterol. Now my doctorwants me to stop. Why?
Dear Reader: When we talkabout cholesterol, we’re gen-erally referring to low-densitylipoprotein (LDL) cholesteroland high-density lipoprotein(HDL) cholesterol.
LDL is also known as “bad”cholesterol. When there ismore LDL than necessaryin the bloodstream, the LDLcholesterol burrows insideblood vessel walls. It slowlyforms plaques of atheroscle-rosis. When those plaques
rupture and block blood flow, they cause heart attacks andstrokes.
Sixty years ago, drugs tolower cholesterol were intro-duced.
One of these was niacin-- also called vitamin B3.Niacin slightly lowered LDLcholesterol, but tended to raiseHDL cholesterol (also knownas “good” cholesterol). HDL
cholesterol removes choles-terol from artery walls. Peoplewith higher levels of HDL inthe blood have a lower risk ofheart disease.
Once statins came along, they became the first-choicetreatment to lower LDL. Theyare much more potent in low-ering LDL cholesterol than ni-acin. But doctors continued toprescribe niacin to raise HDLin people with low HDL levels. The idea was that raising HDLcould ward off heart attacksand strokes.
It was a very reasonabletheory. I thought it was likely
to be true, and for a while tookniacin myself. But then newstudies changed the picture. What was once a theory thatmany, including myself, foundreasonable was slowly mur-dered by a brutal gang of facts.
First, several recent studieshave shown that raising HDLby taking niacin does not pro-tect patients from heart attackor stroke. Even worse, we arelearning that niacin also hasmany risks.
A rapidly absorbed andmetabolized form of niacinis called crystalline niacin. It must be taken two or three
times a day. This form maycause itching, facial flushingand headaches. It may alsotrigger gout, or cause gastro-intestinal bleeding or liverdamage. Finally, it may triggerdiabetes in people who haveborderline-high blood sugar.
Slow-release or sus-tained-release niacin isn’t aslikely to cause flushing anditching. But it still may causethe other, more serious prob-lems I mentioned.
