JERSEY OPERA HOUSE
A YEAR TO CELEBRATE
2 www.jerseyoperahouse.co.uk
There’s certainly a lot happening in Jersey this year with the 70th anniversary of the Liberation, the 2015 island games and, of course, the 150th anniversary of the theatre here in Gloucester Street. The island has a lot to celebrate and we hope both visitors and islanders will support all the events that are on offer throughout the year. In particular, we hope to bring you a stunning Gala Night towards the end of 2015 to mark our 150th milestone.
Back to this season and we had a flurry of excitement in February when we announced comedian Kevin Bridges would be doing three warm up gigs here this summer. Another great coup for us but a big blow for those who didn’t get tickets in time; all three shows sold out in less than 24 hours! Fear not, we have plenty of comedy lined up for the rest of year including one line legends Stewart Francis and Milton Jones, German Comedy Ambassador Henning Wehn, PowerPoint whizz Dave Gorman and a return trip for the very un-PC Pam Ann.
Music fans are assured an action-packed season ahead with a number of superb shows celebrating the talent of The Beach Boys, Whitney Houston, Elvis, Simon and Garfunkel, and Johnny Cash, not to mention the UK’s biggest Motown spectacular with full live band and vocalists.
For families we would recommend the weird and wonderful Voca People, stepping inside Mimika Theatre’s white calico tent, and the Champions of Magic back with a brand new line up. Or, for something educational, don’t miss the interactive and explosive Ministry of Science.
We continue to grow our Studio programme with award-winning one-(wo)man shows. Don’t miss Pope Head about the secret life of Francis Bacon, BBC Slam Champion Sophia Walker’s Around the World in Eight Mistakes and Rabbit Theatre’s Dracula starring David Mynne. Members get £2 off our studio shows, plus there are great discounts on some of our other shows detailed in this Events Guide including The Burlesque Show and The Magic of Motown. Take a look and we’re sure you’ll see that it makes sense to become a Friend of Jersey Opera House!

We’d be lost without our stewards who work Front of House on all our shows. As a non-profit making organisation we rely on our volunteers and can’t thank them enough for all they do. As we increase the number of events in our calendar we are appealing for more stewards to join our team. You’ll be trained up for the role and one of the perks is getting to see the shows for free! If you’d like to volunteer please email forbes.mann@jerseyoperahouse.co.uk
SEEKING STEWARD SUPPORT

THE JERSEY GILBERT AND SULLIVAN SOCIETY PRESENTS A DOUBLE BILL
H.M.S. PINAFORE& TRIAL BY JURYAN AMATEUR PRODUCTION
The First Lord of the Admiralty loves the Captain’s daughter, but she loves a humble sailor. Ashore, Angelina is spurned by Edwin leading to a trial for breach of promise of marriage.
In these two pieces, which brought Gilbert and Sullivan to the forefront of the theatrical world, Gilbert brings his witty sense of the absurd to poke satirical fun at the Law and the English class system, whilst accompanied by Sullivan in his most exuberantly tuneful mood. We defy the audience to leave the theatre without a spring in its step and a tune on its lips!

NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE:
LONDON ROADENCORE SCREENING
Hailed as a remarkable, ground-breaking work during two sell-out runs at the National Theatre, the feature film adaptation of London Road reunites the award-winning team, with script by Alecky Blythe, music by Adam Cork and directed by Rufus Norris (Broken).
With an ensemble cast that includes Olivia Colman, Kate Fleetwood, Anita Dobson and Tom Hardy, London Road documents the events that shook Suffolk in 2006, when the quiet rural town of Ipswich was shattered by the discovery of the bodies of five women.
The residents of London Road had struggled for years with frequent soliciting and kerb-crawling on their street. The film follows the community
who found themselves at the epicentre of the tragic events.
Using their own words set to an innovative musical score, London Road tells a moving story of ordinary people coming together during the darkest of experiences.
This unmissable premiere event broadcast from London will feature an exclusive special Q&A with the key cast and crew following the screening.

HENNING WEHN - EINS, ZWEI, DIYUK TOUR 2015
After more than a decade in Britain, the German Comedy Ambassador has ‘groan’ to like puns... though he still couldn’t eat a whole one.
As Henning’s assimilation is not yet complete, he hasn’t lost his sense of Westphalian wonderment at the foibles of British society.
Expect a crash course in personal accountability and have a right old laugh at the same time! Wunderbar!

Can you believe it’s been 50 years since the most successful Folk/Rock duo of all time recorded their first No 1 hit single The Sound of Silence?
To mark the milestone, The Simon and Garfunkel Story is returning to Jersey Opera House, following a sell-out show last year, success in London’s West End, a sell-out UK tour, and standing ovations for every performance.
Starring award-winning actor Dean Elliott (Buddy Holly in Buddy – The Musical) as Paul Simon and Jonny Smart as Art Garfunkel, this show tells the duo’s story; their humble beginnings, their huge success, their dramatic break up and their famous 1981 Central Park concert.
Complete with original photos and film footage, this 50th anniversary celebration features a full live band performing all the greatest hits including Mrs Robinson, Cecilia, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Homeward Bound and many more.

NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE
EVERYMANLIVE SCREENING
BAFTA winner and Academy Award® nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave) takes the title role in this dynamic new production of one of English drama’s oldest plays.
Everyman is successful, popular and riding high when Death comes calling. He is forced to abandon the life he has built and embark on a last, frantic search to recruit a friend, anyone, to speak in his defence. But Death is close behind, and time is running out.
One of the great primal, spiritual myths, Everyman asks whether it is only in death that we can understand
our lives. A cornerstone of English drama since the 15th Century, it now explodes onto the stage in a startling production directed by the National Theatre’s new Director Rufus Norris (Broken, London Road), with words by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy and movement by Javier De Frutos.

ROYAL SHAKESPEARE COMPANY
OTHELLO LIVE SCREENING
Hugh Quarshie (Star Wars, Holby City) stars in the title role of Shakespeare’s tragedy, alongside Lucian Msamati as Iago, in this Royal Shakespeare Company production directed by Iqbal Khan.
Othello is the greatest general of his age; a fearsome warrior, loving husband and revered defender of Venice against its enemies. However he is also an outsider whose victories have created enemies of his own; men driven by prejudice and jealousy to destroy him. As they plot in the shadows, Othello realises too late that the greatest danger lies not in the hatred of others, but in his own fragile and destructive pride.
