NEXT MEETING TUESDAY, MAY 8, 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM AT AZALEA REC CENTER
May 2018
The new mosaic, named “Art's Popping Up”, on the four sides of the
Azalea Park entry sign at Fairmount Ave. and Poplar St. is complete.
The mosaic is the artistic creation of Artist Vicki Leon who designed it as
well as led the community team to create it.
The sign structure was designed by Harmon Nelson over twelve years
ago. We are extremely happy getting this incredible neighborhood
signage project complete.

UPDATE
The Committee on the Formation of the MAD heard from Paul Sirois on April 3. He was briefed by the City Attorney and what follows is a summary of what's going on. The hearing regarding the La Jolla MAD formation was moved to June 8th. We won't have any new information until after that hearing. The City Staff have no way of knowing if the judge will overturn the previous ruling, but the City Attorney's office will present enough information so that if they ultimately need to appeal the ruling made in June, they will be prepared to provide adequate grounds for the appeal.

ART'S POPPING UP!!!
You're invited to join us for a gathering on Saturday, May 19th at 11 AM

It will be a fun and prideful event. Come out and meet your neighbors and
enjoy the community spirit of Azalea Park. There will be a gathering
afterwards at Burly and the Bean for refreshments and to continue the
celebration. Look forward to seeing you there!

BAJA DOG RESCUEMany thanks to all the neighbors who gave generously to the Baja Dog
Rescue collection barrel left at Burly and the Bean during the month of
March. Eight large contractor bags of blankets, towels, leashes, toys,
food and other miscellaneous items were driven down to Armando and
Lupe in Chula Vista, the wonderful couple who collects items year round
to distribute to help rescue animals to the south of the border. Check out

The Creek to Bay Kick-off for all 113 sites around the county was held at
Azalea Community Park. I Love a Clean San Diego organizes this event
around Earth Day. Over 6,000 volunteers came out and removed an
estimated 175,000 pounds of debris. There were ten cleanup sites in City
Heights. At Azalea Community Park, 142 volunteers painted a protective
coating on a new mural by Gloria Muriel, spread mulch, placed tons of pre-
cut trimmings in a greens dumpster, picked up litter, painted the rails at the
Hollywood Park Switchback and painted park benches and tables. Our
Park and Rec staff facilitated the work in the park while the other City
Heights sites were captained by neighborhood stewards and San Diego
Canyonlands staff. It was a great day for San Diego as well as Mother
Earth!
