1. Concussed!Bringing Back a Superstar to the Game
Concussed!is a game in which the player will incarnate Sidney Crosby and heal from the concussion the Penguin
captain suffered during the 2011 Winter Classic against the Washington Capitals. In order to do so, the player wil
have to go through all four stages of recovery: the black room, off-ice training, non-contact practice and contact
practice. After each stage, the player will have to answer questions about himself Sidney Crosby in order to ge
cleared for the next stage. If he/she successfully completes the process, Sidney Crosby will be able to rejoin his
Pittsburgh Penguin teammates on the ice. If he/she doesnt, Crosby will have to retire and entertain a career as th
skate-sharpener of his teams biggest rival, the Washington Capitals.
2. Concussed!A Game for the Fans
Concussed!is a mix of a platform game (the four stages: The Black Room, Off-ice Training, Non-contact Practice
and Contact Practice) and a trivia game (the questions the doctor asked in to clear Crosby for the next stage). If t
player completes the healing process, he might even help the Penguins win the Stanley Cup.
2.1: Discovering Concussions
The platform game side of the game will make the player discover the various stages of concussion recovery whil
the appointments with the doctor will help the player test his/her knowledge of Sidney Crosbys life and career and
discover new things he/she might have not known.
Concussed!is a game targeting hockey fans, Sidney Crosby fans and Pittsburgh Penguins fans of all ages and
backgrounds. The main purpose of the game is to draw people via entertainment to the Penguins by using their
main marketing tool: their captain, Sidney Crosby.

2.2: Learn about Sidney Crosby
Concussed!provides a chance for the player to learn about Sidney Crosby, the flagship player of the Pittsburgh
Penguins, while having fun in a platform game. The game would be perfect as a flash application available on the
Pittsburgh Penguins facebook page. Facebook being the social giant that it is, it would help the Penguins reach a
lot of people and have an advantage over other NHL teams by offering their fan an humorous game that in additio
to entertaining them will teach him new stuff about Sidney Crosby. Crosby being the most marketable member of
the organization, using him and his very-talked-about concussion to draw new fans to the game of hockey and the
Pittsburgh Penguins seems like a no-brainer.
The game would then be the propriety of the Pittsburgh Penguins and it would make it easier for us to get
permission to use their logo and likeness rights. The concept is easily adaptable to another hockey star, another
injury, another hockey-related quest or another team, so it could be sold to any team interested in achieving the
same thing the Penguins would want to achieve with this game.
The ultimate goal is to construct a very simple, accessible and enjoyable game that will entertain and inform
hockey fans about the greatest player in the game today. It would also help the Penguins connect with their fans
via goofy entertainment and hopefully draw a different crowd towards hockey.

3.1: Genre
Concussed!mixes two popular genres: platform and trivia games.
3.1.1: Platform Game
Each stages of recovery can be considered as a world of platforms. The player doesnt have to jump from
platform to platform in order to complete the level, but he/she has to dodge different objects as they navigate
throughout the course.

3.1.2: Trivia Game
The trivia portion of the game consists of answering various questions on Sidney Crosbys career in order to verify
if his memory is correct and if he can be cleared for the next step of his recovery. On each stage, the level of
difficulty of the questions raises.
3.2: Projects Scope and Learning Objectives
The goal of Concussed!is to make hockey fans, especially Pittsburgh Penguins fan, learn new things about their
captain and franchise player Sidney Crosby. From an entertainment standpoint, Concussed!hopes to make
players work on their reflexes while having a good time playing a light-hearted and easy to master game.
3.3: Thematic Concepts
Concussed! is a hockey-centered game focusing quasi-exclusively on Sidney Crosby. All the themes in the game
are centered on hockey and its culture.
Dedication
Hard-work
Achieving goals
Competition
Durability
3.4: Target Audience
Concussed!is primarily geared towards hockey fans, particularly Pittsburgh Penguins fans, of all ages and all
backgrounds. In order to successfully complete the game, the player needs to have an average to good knowledg
of Sidney Crosby and his greatest career achievements. Neophytes will have a hard time completing the game, b
the answers are easy to find on the Internet, so even someone with no hockey knowledge at all can complete the
game if he/she he researches a little. The platform part of the game should attract casual gamers while the trivia
part of the game is obviously more Crosby-fan-friendly.

Page 6Concussed!
Since there is a trivia part, people wanting to play the game have to know how to read, so it is not really for childre
under 5. The platform part is simple enough for a very young child to go through, so they might be able to play
under parental supervision even though it is unlikely for them to know the answers to the questions.
Even if primarily geared towards Crosby fans, the fact that the game can be completed by people who doesnt
know Crosby at all via some research makes the game a useful tool to promote Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh
Penguins.
3.5: The Games Environment
Concussed!contains 5 different levels. Four of these levels of the four stages of recovery: the Black Room, Off-ic
Training, Non-Contact practice and Contact Practice. The Doctors Office, which Sidney visits 4 times, is the fifth
and final level in the game.
3.5.1: Level 1: The Black Room
The Black Room is a dark room where a player gets examined after he suffers a concussion. In the Black Room,
there is two chairs. One for the doctor and one for the patient: Sidney Crosby.
Obstacles in level 1:
Balls
Pucks
3.5.2: Level 2 : Off-ice Training
Off-ice training takes place in the gym. In their, there are training machines, loose weights and other concussed
players. There is also a running track around which Sidney will be running. Balls, training equipment and
concussed players will be in his way and hell have to dodge them.

Page 7Concussed!
3.5.3: Level 3: Non-contact Practice
For Non-contact Practice, Sidney Crosby will skate onto the ice alone. Sidney will skate in straight line and dodge
pylons, sticks, pucks and hockey gear. It is the practice rink so there are no fans in the stands. There is a Penguin
logo at Center Ice and the nets arent there.
Obstacles in level 3:
Pylons
Sticks
Pucks
Hockey gear
3.5.4: Level 4: Contact Practice
Contact practice level looks exactly like Non-Contact Practice except that there are now other players skatingaround and the nets have been put back in place.
Obstacles in level 4:
Pylons
Sticks
Pucks
Hockey gear
Pittsburgh Penguins team mates
Note: For an example of some of the obstacles see Appendix 1.
3.5.6: Doctors Office:
In the Doctors Office, the Doctor is sitting at his desk and Sidney Crosby is facing him. The level is Crosbys
subjective view of the Doctor and his desk.
3.6: Characters
Concussed! features only two characters: Sidney Crosby, the character controlled by the player, and The Doctor,
non-playing character. Teammates also appear in the fourth stage of recovery (Contact Pratice) but are not
characterized, they are considered as obstacles.

3.6.1: Sidney Crosby
Sidney Crosby is a well-know hockey player who plays for the Pittsburgh Penguins of the NHL. He has been
drafted first overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft in Ottawa. He played his junior career for the Rimouski Oceanic o
the Quebec Major Junior League. Sidney Crosbys main qualities are his leadership, his hard-working mentality
and his incredible hockey skills. In the game, Crosbys characteristics will be showcased mainly through the
questions asked by the doctor.
3.6.2: Doctor
The Doctor will laugh at Sidney if he doesnt have the good answers and he will taunt him if he fails any levels. He
will be portrayed as a bad guy who enjoys when others suffer. He will act very surprised every time Sidney goes
through a level or successfully answers three or more question a visit. He is an old man with white hair who speak
with an heavy German accent similar to the one Peter Sellers uses in Stanley Kubricks Dr. Strangelove or: How I
learned to stop worrying and love the bomb.
The Doctor will use various taunts:
Haha, if you dont know that you will never make it back?
Wrong! I always knew Ovechkin would have the better career?
Stop wasting my time!

There are four different outcomes and three of them depends on how many points the player scores throughout th
game. The fourth outcome is the consequence for not completing the four levels (which means the player has
failed one of the four levels more than two times).
Winning the Stanley Cup (between 4000 and 3600 points): Sidney Crosby came back at 100% and led the
Pittsburgh Penguins to their fourth Stanley Cup with a legendary playoff performance capturing the Conn Smythe
Trophy in the process.
Losing to the Capitals in the Conference Finals (between 3600 and 2600 points): Sidney Crosby came back to the
ice at about 80% and helped his team reached the Eastern Conference Finals. Unfortunately, Sidney didnt have
enough gas left in the tank and the Penguins bowed down to their biggest rivals, the Washington Capitals.
Eliminated in the first round (under 2600 points): Sidney Crosby came back to the ice at about 70% of his initial
capacities and helped the Penguins make the playoffs. Unfortunately, he wasnt able to lead them past the first
round and they got eliminated after a hard-fought series.
