WHAT IS A FRACTION?A fraction is a number that tells us parts of a whole.

This is a whole,one big circle!

These are parts!

WHAT IS A FRACTION?LOOK AT THIS PIZZA! IT’S A WHOLE PIZZA

This pizza has been cut into half! It’s now TWO parts. In fractions we call this “one half” we write this as

This pizza has been cut into three equal parts. We call this one third and write it as

THE WHOLE PIZZA CUT INTO THREE EQUAL PARTS GIVES US THREE THIRDS. THINK ABOUT JUST ONE SLICE. WE CAN WRITE THIS USING A FRACTION

THINK ABOUT TWO SLICES. TWO SLICES IS TWO THIRDS. WE CAN WRITE TWO THIRDS AS

THE TOP NUMBER OF THE FRACTION TELLS US HOW MANY SLICES WE HAVE.WE CALL IT THE NUMERATOR.

The bottom number tells us how many parts in the whole pizza.We call it the denominator.

LETS TAKE A LOOK AT DIFFERENT TYPES OF FRACTIONS.

This is a fraction. The numerator is less than the denominator.

This is an improper fraction. The numerator is more than the denominator.

This is a mixed number. It has a whole number and a fraction combined.

GREATER THAN OR LESS THAN?

This is greater than.

This is less than.

ADDING FRACTIONSRemember that fractions are

made up of two numbers. The number above is called?

Numerator

And the number below is called?Denominator

TO ADD FRACTIONS, THEY MUST HAVE THE SAME

DENOMINATOR. We cannot add because they do not

have the same denominator.

Before you add two fractions make sure the denominators are the same.
