Unit 5Materials

5th Grade2015/2016

What do I know?

MATERIALS

What’s the difference between natural and artificial materials?

MATERIALSMaterials can have different origins.

NATURAL

ARTIFICIAL

MATERIALSMaterials can have different origins.

• They are obtained directly from nature.

• For example:NATURAL

• Humans make them from natural materials.

• For example:ARTIFICIAL

RAW MATERIALSHumans use different materials to make what they need.

These materials come from natural resources called RAW MATERIALS.

RAW MATERIALSRaw materials can come from different sources:

OF ANIMAL ORIGIN

OF PLANT ORIGIN

TASK 1: WE ARE INVENTORS!

Invent and object. Draw it.Describe its utility.Choose the materials it is made of and explain why you chose them.

WILF (What I Look For)-Presentation-Language-Creativity- Description of the utility of the object.-Description of the materials.

SPECIAL CUTLERYDescription: this cutlery set has got a tank to save salt, sugar, pepper and other spices. They are very useful because you can season your food at the same time you eat.

Metal. The blade of the knife is made of metal because it is hard and resistant.

Wood. The corpus is made of wool because it is thermal insulator. Therefore, when we eat, we don’t get burned.

Diamond. The box of the set is made of diamond because it is hard and transparent.

TECHNOLOGY HAS ADVANCED WITH THE INVENTION OF NEW MATERIALS

Glass. It is transparent and can be made into many shapes. We use it to make glasses, bottles, windows and mirrors.

Paper. It is made from cellulose obtained from wood. We use paper for newspapers, books, bags…

New fabrics. New textiles have been developed. Elastic and waterproof materials are good thermal insulators and used to make swimwear.

TECHNOLOGY HAS ADVANCED WITH THE INVENTION OF NEW MATERIALS

Semiconductors. They are used in the electronic circuits of computers, in laser devices, in lightning, etc.

Superconductors. They conduct electricity very well. They are used:

-in magnetic levitation trains-for transporting electric current in devices.

TECHNOLOGY HAS ADVANCED WITH THE INVENTION OF NEW MATERIALS

Fibreglass. It is very resistant and easy to shape. It is used in cars and ships.

Optical fibre transmits light.

TASK 2: GRAPHENE

Read the text about grapheneDescribe its properties.Explain its applications.

WILF (What I Look For)-Presentation-Language-Description of its properties.-Explanation of its applications.
