Program Overview
Admission Procedures And related Requirements
Social Science Education offers two Master of Science programs. Our Post-Certification Masters of Science program is designed for our undergraduate alumni and other students already certified in Social Studies.
Our second program is a Master of Science in Teaching (MoST) and is designed for students with a social science-related bachelor’s degree and seeking certification to teach.
Admission processes for each program are the same.
Prospective students should review university requirements and processes for graduate admissions.
Applications for admission may be submitted online to School of Teacher Education graduate program coordinator.
Applicants must submit the following with their application:
•Copiesofallundergraduatetranscripts (minimum GPA of 3.0 required)
•OnecopyofaGREscore (minimum score of 1000 is required)
•Threelettersofrecommendation •Astatementofacademicandprofessionalgoals •Awritingsample
Master’s of Science Degree in Social Science Education
Degree RequirementsTheMoSTprogramisintendedforundergraduateswithsocial science-related degrees wishing to enter the teaching profession with certification and a Master of Science in Teaching degree.
Core courses include:
Social Science Education Core Courses– 15 hrsField of Concentration Courses – 18 hrsComprehensive Exam – Taken as Pass/Fail
The fifteen hours of social science education coursesare intended to augment a strong undergraduate social studies content knowledge and give our students a solid foundation in educational research methods, global issues, and social studies history.
Theeighteenhoursinafieldofconcentrationincludegraduate-level courses taken in a content area of choice including but not limited to History, Economics, Government, Geography, Psychology, Sociology, and Anthropology. Other social science-related fields may be selected in consultation with the graduate advisor.
These eighteen graduate content hours along with theMaster of Science also provides eligibility to teach in that content area in most Community Colleges around the country.
After Acceptance
Upon admission to the SSE graduate program, candidates must meet with the SSE graduate advisor to complete an advising sheet as a plan of study.
All graduate students must meet with the SSE graduate advisor at least once each semester to review their progress and status, as well as stay informed on program activities and deadlines
