Description: This large, two-volume set covers the entirespectrum of general surgery, illustrating and outlining sur-gical technique. This fifth edition provides new and up-dated chapters that complement prior editions well.

Purpose: The purpose is to provide a wide-ranging, topic-based book on general surgery. New chapters cover com-plications, outcome measures, and patient factors.

Audience: Written at a level appropriate for the practicingsurgeon, the book covers the entire field of general surgery,including pediatrics, thoracic, oncology, and head andneck. Surgeons in training should use this book to preparefor future cases, anticipate complications, and manage dif-ficult situations. For surgical residents, this book (old ornew edition) should be on the short list of “must read”texts.

Feature: Within each of the many topic areas, separatechapters cover traditional surgery, minimally invasivetechniques, difficult situations, and complications.Many chapters are dedicated to one surgical procedureproviding adequate depth and scope. Illustrations andalgorithms are well selected and helpful. Many newchapters have been added and some classic chaptersmoved to a web site, accessible with a code provided inthe book.

Assessment: This edition is well written by masters inthe field with ample space allotted to illustration, text, andevidence. Previous editions were excellent and many of theclassic chapters were kept. New chapters have been addedthat include new authors or new topics.
