We remember all those who have died recently especially Geoff Gunn, Sheila Sutton, and those whose anniversaries occur at this time: Stanley Cattle, Martin Thomas, Valerie St John Webster, Rosalie Hayhurst, Paul Gallagher, Hilda Bending, Eileen Manders, Gerzuydas Balbosiovas, Bronwyn Webber, Patricia Baker, Mary Branscombe, Frank Crossman, Eileen Foxton, Dorothy Goodall- Copestake, Ann Major, Catherine O’Flaherty, Mary Platt, Clare Smith & Bernard Ridge

In this week’s gospel we see Jesus retreating into gentile territory for a while, to take a break

from endless confrontation with the Pharisees, and to let things cool down a bit. While he is there a

woman (we know from Mark, a Greek woman of social standing) begs Jesus to cure her daughter,

who is tormented by a demon. Perhaps because he is in gentile territory Jesus makes clear his own

standing as Messiah – he comes first for the people of Israel; they must be fed before the “dogs” of

the household. The word used for dogs here indicates little pet dogs – so he is actually being more

tender than we at first realise, but he is testing the woman’s faith nevertheless.

She comes through with flying colours. With real humility she persists in begging mercy from the

man she believes to be the Messiah and her prayer is answered. Jesus found faith amongst the

pagans that often he did not find amongst his own people. Let’s not think that because we’re

Catholics we are entitled to God’s privileged attention – there may be others, outside the Church,

whose humility and simplicity of heart bring them an enviable closeness to God.
