Mary Russell Mitford’s Letters: A Correspondence Network from 1798 to 1855

a directed network of all known letters Mitford wrote and all letters written to her, organized chronologically in ten-year periods

• Names are nodes (dots). • Dates of connection are “edges” (connecting lines). The color of an edge is determined by the

decade it represents. The following slides filter the network by decade. • The network is organized by direction of correspondence, and the font and node size is

determined by “indegree”, that is the number of letters that were sent to a given person.• MRM’s mother and John Ruskin are important as senders of letters, but we don’t have any letters

sent to them, so we labelled their nodes by hand in blue.
