It's recommended that everyone have theirfurnace or heating units regularly maintainedand cleaned by a professional. Cleanor replace the furnace filters often. Vacuumthe vent ducts and install a programmablethermostat so you can schedule the unit forlower temperatures while you are away.

HEATING SYSTEM MAINTENANCE The most recommended method of reducingenergy consumption is to seal air leaks inthe heating ducts under the home. Check thearea underneath the furnace for loose ductsor joints and use acrylic mastic tape or metalDuct Tape if possible as traditional gray fabrictape can come loose.

SEAL HEATING DUCTS

A window unit air conditioner is convenient for the warm months, but not so great for the cool. It'sbest to remove the air conditioner completely during the winter months. If you can't remove theunit, use weatherstripping and an insulated air conditioner cover to limit the air leaks.

ADD UNDERPINNING

In the winter, open any curtains/blinds onthe windows on the sunny side of yourhouse during the day to allow sunlight tohelp naturally heat your home. During thesummer, keep curtains/blinds closed toblock unwanted heat gain.

Another consideration is the underpinningaround the home. If it is not already in place, adding this is an effective way to retain heat, while also shielding the underside of the homefrom frosty winds. Underpinning also helps tokeep small animals from getting under yourhome a damaging your duct work.
