Recommendations

Manchester United Soccer Club (MUSC) was created in 1992 in Manchester, New Hampshire (USA) to bring recreational players to a higher level of competition and to prepare them for the State Olympic Development Program and/or high school teams.

The Board of Directors of MUSC decided to organize a summer soccer tournament to generate revenue.

MUSC regularly competes in 3 – 4 tournaments every summer.

These tournaments have been reported to generate between $50,000 - $70,000

BACKGROUND

In her role as the Tournament Director of MUSC, Nicolette was tasked to organize the club’s first summer tournament.

She proposed a committee brainstorming session which ended up being a “free-for-all” of ideas and suggestions with no prescribed format

Upon discussing the happenings of the meeting with her husband, she was advised to create a Work Breakdown Structure for the Tournament

BACKGROUND (Continued)

To organize a soccer invitational tournament to raise revenue.

This revenue is to be used to :

◦ Refurbish and expand the number of soccer fields ◦ Augment the club’s scholarship program.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

QUESTION 1

Make a list of the major deliverables for the project and use them to develop a draft of the work breakdown structure for the tournament that contains at least three levels of detail.

What are the major deliverables associated with hosting an event such as a soccer tournament?

MUSC TOURNAMENT

• Soccer field

• Qualified Referees

• Team Screening System (Criteria)

QUESTION 2

How would developing a WBS alleviate some of the problems that occurred during the first meeting and help Nicolette organize and plan the project?

Question 2:How would developing a WBS alleviate some of the problems that occurred during the first meeting and help Nicolette organize and plan the project?

Developing a WBS will help Nicolette define all the aspects of the tournament in a hierarchical framework that will help determine the cost, time and resources required of each element of the project

With this information, Nicolette can plan, schedule and budget the tournament as well as assign responsibilities to members of the committee

This framework would help structure and coordinate subsequent discussions/meetings as there would be clear guidelines and topics to follow (i.e., no more “free-for-all” discussions that end 30 mins late)

Q QUESTION 3

Where can Nicolette find additional information to help her develop a WBS for the tournament?

Internet

From previous soccer tournament hosts (e.g., clubs, school teams), local soccer associations/organizations, local referees, retired players and other football experts

Soccer Books, Magazines, News articles

Question 3:Where can Nicolette find additional information to help her develop a WBS for the tournament?

QUESTION 4

How could Nicolette and her task force use the WBS to generate cost estimates for the tournament?

Why would this be useful information?

Question 4:How could Nicolette and her task force use the WBS to generate cost estimates for the tournament?

Why would this be useful information?

The WBS breaks down the deliverables into small work packages (or activities/tasks) that can be assigned costs. These costs can be “rolled up” or summed together to determine the cost estimate of the entire tournament.

Because the main objective of the tournament was to raise funds or to generate revenue, the cost estimates would be helpful because they would help Nicolette and her task force know whether they made a profit or not

(Profit = Revenue – Cost)

RECOMMENDATIONS

Define the Project Scope of the tournament using the Project Scope Checklist

Establish the tournament’s priorities Create a WBS Integrate the WBS with the Organization to

create the Organizational Breakdown Structure (OBS)

Code the WBS Use a Responsibility Matrix to assign specific

responsibilities to the committee members Create a Project Communication Plan
