What?
MAN MANAGEMENT by Dr.Vikram Singh
"If you wish to plan for a year, sow seeds; if you wish to plan for ten years; plant a tree;
and if you wish to plan for a lifetime, develop man"
Although man management has been in existence since ages as obvious in the above quote, only recently there has been some major redirection in thought concerning its importance as a
discipline to the effectiveness of the organisation. During feudalistic era the man management was mostly around the relationship of owner and the servant, in the industrial era it was of owner and
blue collar worker and in the information era it is the management of knowledge worker and therefore the approaches which has been in vogue in past to manage servants and workers has to transform to manage a knowledge worker. It is in this context where paradigm shift in the approach of a manager has to take place to manage his men in the organisation. The focus of this paper is
not merely to articulate the academic significance of various man management processes but also to enable the managers to apply them in live situation based on sound behavioural and
management principles.
I googled the web and found the number one site for the day – the quote may have some relevance!

Man Management
What?It is a matter of making sure we include
everyone involved in the game,
make them feel like they have contributed
treat and speak to them as you would hope to be treated and spoken to
and by day’s end you (and they) will have enjoyed the experience!

Man Management
The following is a summary of the collated ideas.
During the panel debriefs (July/August 2007) discussions were held to gather information from the panel members about their methods of developing routines to assist their preparation, concentration and decision making.
We divided the concept into three main areas …..
…… before the season starts, ……on game day, before the game starts …..
……and before each ball.
A Routine Reminder……..
July 2008 8
Man Management
Before the season starts…….…… be fully prepared well in advance
…ensure Laws and playing conditions are well read and digested
…check your gear (clothes, counter etc)
…attend local meetings and participate fully…work on your fitness levels through the off season
…attend net practices and start watching that ball
…use those nets to find ‘your position’ behind the stumps…prepare for preseason games
…reflect on last season’s strong and weak points

Man Management
Control the ‘controllables’ was the catchphrase in this segment and it was noticeable that both panels had similar views…
Get your private and business life in orderso that your mind is clear!
Before the season starts…….
… most importantly…
(in other words, it works)

Man Management
Now for Game Day, before the toss.Amongst the list below, you will not find all things that could be done (like meeting with captains or scorers). We decided that those are staple diet for all umpires and umpire manuals and tried to look further into getting your mind set ready for play.
…be well organised before leaving home
…make sure any personal issues are dealt with and ‘parked’
…know what your routines are and be comfortable with them
…check your gear (again)
…contact your on field partner if possible before meeting
July 2008 11
Man Management
It was obvious that the mental organisation, before the game starts, was important to everyone and could not be overstated.
…be at the ground at least one hour beforehand
…arrive looking like an organised, efficient umpire
…do all ground checks with your partner
…run through how you both expect to communicate with each other
…make sure you have drinks available
Still on Game Day, before the toss.
In addition, the chance to start the teamwork in the right direction from the beginning was heavily emphasised.
July 2008 12
Man Management
… keep your head still and watch the ball
Before each ball …Here, we started with the bowler’s end but later moved on to standing at square. Several points are applicable to both and again you may find some things omitted (like counting balls) but we concentrated more on the mind set.
…find your ‘location’ behind the stumps
…ensure you are comfortable, in position
…follow your routine for every ball
…switch off between deliveries
July 2008 13
Man Management
Before each ball … routines…In talking about routines there was no specific pattern or sequence which all panel members followed. However, they tended to use similar ploys as a trigger to start their own system of focussing for the next delivery.
…watch the bowler walking back to his mark, turning
…breathe (it helps us all!), relax
…be ready to focus, concentrate
July 2008 14
Man Management
The main point here was that all umpires had a routine to follow for every delivery and it remained the same all day. Get into a pattern and this provides a safety net to fall back into when the going gets a bit tougher. Maintaining the routines throughout the game will help you to keep consistent.
…listen for the bowler’s footsteps
…look for the ball
…mentally remind yourself of your task (‘watch the foot/ball’)
Before each ball … more…

Man Management
What about square leg?Another series of ideas came forth and showed us all again that walking away from the stumps is only the start of the next part of the day’s work!
…when you call ‘over’, it is definitely not over
…make notes (which bowler, how many overs)
When it comes to taking notes, the timing here is an individual preference. Some like to do their writing as they walk out to square leg, others prefer to get the pen out after the fourth ball of every over – do what is comfortable to you but be consistent so that it becomes one of your routines.
July 2008 16
Man Management
watch the height of deliveries (does it bounce over stump height)
What about square leg?.... more……be alert when a new batsman arrives… count fielders
When a new batsman arrives it pays to check his height levels out straightaway. That means pads (is he tall and a ball hitting the top may go over?), shoulder (pick out something in the background to compare for short pitched deliveries) and likewise for the head. It is not just the batsman who can be caught out by a short ball first up and we haven’t aligned comfortably for the assistance from square – be prepared, early!

Man Management
Two make a team
Gain strength from your combination
- help your partner wherever possible
What about square leg…still more…
Regular eye contact is an essential part of your routines. Use it to help with the distance a batsman is standing out from the crease and all the other little helpful things we can do for each other, but also use it to gain strength from each other. Keep the partnership strong – it will assist your confidence in all matters.

Man Management
… and believe in yourself!
Finally, a few collated thoughts on decision making
…with LBW decisions, be conservative
…keep your routines, even after a possible mistake
…park mistakes
…have positive thoughts ..
